Welcome to the Department of Civil Engineering at Stony Brook University. We are a dynamic and forward-looking department within a flagship public research university, committed to educating the next generation of civil engineers and advancing knowledge that supports the safety, resilience, efficiency, and sustainability of our built and natural environments.

As a growing department, we embrace opportunities to advance research and education beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries. We seek to help shape the future of civil engineering through education, research, and innovation. Our distinguished faculty bring diverse expertise and multidisciplinary perspectives that advance scholarship in areas such as sustainable water systems, coastal resilience, geohazards, marine and offshore wind energy, adaptive structures, and smart infrastructure.

As an ABET-accredited program, we provide students with a strong foundation across the core civil engineering disciplines, while offering opportunities for specialization through technical electives and research experiences. The close synergy between research and teaching supports an evolving curriculum responsive to emerging areas such as sustainability, artificial intelligence, and energy systems. Our graduates pursue diverse careers in professional practice, and many continue to advanced study and research.
