Change of Degree Level

If you move to a higher academic level at Stony Brook University, you must request an updated Form DS-2019 to reflect the new degree. This includes changes such as bachelor’s to master’s or master’s to PhD.

Changes to your J-1 category would not qualify for a Change of Degree Level (i.e. Non-Degree to Degree, or reverse matriculation PhD to Masters).

Eligibility and Timing

You must meet both requirements:

  • Submit your request within 30 days of:

    • completing your current program, or

    • completing your Academic Training

  • Start your new program within 5 months of your program or AT end date

You are not eligible if your new program does not begin within this 5-month period.

You cannot request a change of level after the first day of classes unless you have prior approval from the Graduate School.

How to Apply

Follow these steps to request a Change of Degree Level:

  1. Log in to accessVIS using your NetID and password, or Limited Services login credentials.
  2. Select J-1 Student Services from the left menu.

  3. Complete the Change of Degree Level request.

  4. Upload sufficient proof of funding for your new academic level. View the estimated costs.

VIS typically processes requests within 5–7 business days.

Important: VIS cannot review your request until your matriculation is finalized by the appropriate admitting office (Undergraduate Admissions, the Graduate School, SPD, HSC, or IAP).

Employment Considerations

Between Academic Levels

If you receive your updated Form DS-2019 for the new degree level, you may continue on-campus employment during the break between programs.

While on Post-Completion Academic Training

You must stop all employment by the first day of classes in your new program. Your AT authorization ends automatically when you begin a new degree program.

Plan your employment end date carefully to avoid working without authorization.
