Extending Your DS-2019

You must complete your program by the end date listed in Section 3 of your Form DS-2019.
If you need more time to complete your program, you may request a Program Extension and receive a new DS-2019 with an updated program end date.

Eligibility Requirements

You may be eligible for a program extension if you meet all of the following requirements:

  • You are currently maintaining valid J-1 status.
  • You have maintained full-time enrollment, or been authorized for RCL, during your program.
  • You have sufficient financial support to cover tuition, fees, and living expenses for the additional time needed.

Finishing Program in Summer or Winter

If you will complete your degree during a summer or winter session, that term is treated the same as a regular semester for immigration reporting and enrollment.

You must be enrolled full-time or be approved for a Reduced Course Load (RCL), and you must follow normal online credit limitations.

How to Apply

Follow these steps to request an I-20 Program Extension:

Step 1: Gather Supporting Documentation
  • Exchange/Visiting Students: Copy of your updated offer letter from International Academic Programs
  • All Students:
    • Proof of Financial Support: Documentation from you or a sponsor to show you can afford tuition, fees, and living expenses for the additional time needed. View the estimated costs
    • Reason for Program Extension: Written explanation describing why you need more time to complete your degree.
Step 2: Submit Program Extension Request in accessVIS
  • Log in to accessVIS using your NetID and password.
  • Select J-1 Student Services from the left menu.
  • Select the Program Extension Request.
Step 3: VIS to Issue New DS-2019
  • Your request will first go to your academic department and/or advisors, and then will come to VIS for final review. Please allow 5-7 business days for processing.

Upon approval, a new DS-2019 with an updated end date will be provided to you.

Important Considerations

  • You must continue to maintain full-time enrollment during your extension.
  • Your extension must be for the same program and objective listed on your current DS-2019.
  • Extensions are typically granted for up to one year at a time.
  • You must maintain valid health insurance for the entire extension period.
