Plan Ahead: Summer Travel Reminders for International Students
Apr 23, 2026
Dear Student,
As summer approaches, we want to share important reminders to help you plan for international travel and a smooth return to the United States.
Plan Ahead
International travel conditions continue to involve increased scrutiny at U.S. consulates and ports of entry. Visa delays, additional screening, and travel disruptions are possible, so plan accordingly.
Before You Travel
Make sure you have:
- Valid Passport (at least 6 months beyond your return date)
- Form I-20 with a valid travel signature (within the past 12 months; 6 months if on
OPT/STEM). If your travel signature will expire before your return, submit the Travel Signature Request in accessVIS at least 5-7 days before travel.
- Valid F-1 Visa (unless exempt): Your visa must be unexpired, reflect your current status, and have at least one remaining
entry if it’s limited.
- Need a new visa? Be prepared for longer wait times, additional security checks, and potential delays.
- Traveling to Canada or Mexico for 30 days or less? You may qualify for Automatic Visa Revalidation even with an expired visa.
Check Your Status
- Confirm with your VIS Advisor that your SEVIS record is active.
- Check your visa status through the Department of State's Visa Status Portal using your DS-160 Application ID.
Visa revocations can occur without notice - verify before you travel.
Travel Risks to Consider
Avoid non-essential travel if you have had any prior interaction with the criminal
justice system. Even incidents that did not result in an arrest or conviction (including relatively
minor infractions, such as traffic violations or unpaid parking tickets) can lead
to complications during visa processing or at the U.S. port of entry.
Be mindful of increased screening
U.S. government agencies are applying closer review of visa applications and entry,
including social media and prior activities. This may result in additional questioning
or delays. We recommend reviewing our Know Your Rights page before you travel.
Special considerations (OPT, STEM OPT, H-1B applicants)
Travel during OPT, STEM OPT, or while a change of status (such as H-1B) is pending can carry additional risks. In some cases, travel may impact your application or ability to reenter the U.S.
While Traveling
- Keep your passport, visa and Form I-20 in your carry-on bag—never in your checked luggage. You'll need these for inspection
when you return to the United States.
- Monitor travel advisories and health regulations that might affect your trip.
Upon Re-Entry to the U.S.
Be prepared to:
- Present your passport, visa, and Form I-20/DS-2019 for inspection.
- Answer questions about your academic plans and travel - answer clearly and confidently.
- Undergo possible additional screening. While delays can be frustrating, staying patient and cooperative will help the process go smoothly.
