The purpose of EOP is to ensure student's success by supporting them academically,
socially, professionally and even financially. This is why applicants who apply with
EOP consideration have to qualify both academically and economically. Because of the additional financial verification process required to determine EOP
eligibility, it can take more time to review qualified candidates for any EOP seat.
Students may apply for SBU's EOP program during the Early Action application process,
but only on the Common Application, as the SUNY application does not allow for EOP
students to apply for EA throughout the system. However, the Admissions Office can only review a student's basic academic eligibility for the program, and students will not be guaranteed a formal admissions decision during the Early Action timeframe. This means that a student will either be notified they are academically eligible
(only) for EOP and will move into the next process of financial verification, or if
a student does not meet the academic guidelines for EOP which could result in a denial
from the institution or notification they have been updated to general admissions
review.
Please visit our EOP/AIM website to review basic program requirements. You may also review academic guidelines at
SBU and economic eligibility guidelines throughout the EOP system as well as a sample financial aid packages for EOP students. You may also review the SUNY EOP site for more general information as well as other other EOP site information.
Students who request consideration for SUNY's Arthur O. Eve Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) on their first-year application for admission must complete an EOP Financial Eligibility Review screening to determine whether they meet the financial eligibility requirements.
EOP applicants will be directed to the SUNY EOP Financial Eligibility Review portal after indicating their interest for consideration for EOP and have completed the application for admission, whether using the SUNY application, the Common application:
At Stony Brook University, we will be reviewing EOP applicants for academic eligibility according to our guidelines. Once a student has been determined to be both academically eligible for SBU by our team, and economically eligible for EOP by SUNY, we can only then consider that applicant for a seat in our class. As always, due to the highest number of EOP applicants in the system, eligibility does not guarantee admission at SBU.
The most important thing for students to know is that eligibility does not guarantee a seat at SBU. We received 9,000+ applications for EOP alone for the Fall 2025, and while we have the largest class in SUNY, that only means a couple hundred students. So time is of the essence on getting everything submitted, completed, and done with close attention to deadlines and monitoring their own applications and material requests through our portals and their email. Please contact us at enroll@stonybrook.edu for any other questions on EOP/AIM at SBU.
