Assessment Council
Institutional assessment at Stony Brook University is guided by the Assessment Council.
Charge
The Assessment Council is constituted by the Provost in consultation with the University Senate to focus on the development of campus-wide policies and procedures for academic assessment and to ensure rigorous assessment across our programs. It fosters a culture of assessment enabling us to understand the impact of our instruction on our students and to celebrate the success of our SBU programs through the accomplishments of our students.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement an institutional policy for student learning assessment, with clear timelines and expectations;
- Lead institution-wide student learning assessment initiatives, including assessment of student learning outcomes in general education;
- Review institutional assessment progress and makes recommendations for improvement;
- Review assessment reports prepared by programs; provide feedback as appropriate; and make recommendations for adjustments to policy and process;
- Communicate to the Provost, University Senate, and faculty at-large about assessment activities and their effectiveness;
- Identify professional development needs in the area of assessment and recommend appropriate strategies for addressing these needs;
- Develop and sponsor a university-wide recognition program for assessment of student learning;
- Assess assessment policies and procedures.
Membership
Faculty members from each SBU school and college are represented on the Council and typically serve three-year terms. Administrative members of the Council are appointed by the Provost according to their role.
