This month, Stony Brook University recognizes Native American Heritage Month (NAHM) in acknowledgment of the rich contributions of Native/Indigenous Peoples. Our national theme for 2021 is Gifts of Our Ancestors: Celebrating Indigenous Knowledge and Cultures. We invite you to attend the many programs that will be offered during NAHM to learn about Native culture and thank our partners for making these events possible. Please also enjoy the numerous other campus activities that will take place in November.

Native American Drum Meditation
with Rev. Dr. Ric Statler

In honor of NAHM, join us for a guided meditation with Rev. Dr. Ric Statler. As a Native American Drummer, Rev. Dr. Ric Statler has an indigenous bloodline and 35 years of experience in this spiritual healing practice. He has mentored under elder drummers, medicine men, and even the 13 Grandmothers. Come immerse yourself in a Shamanic meditation/vision quest and explore the cultural practice of Native American Drum Mediation as a healing tool and way to connect with Self, as well as Creator.

Film & Discussion: Unseen Tears

Join us for the viewing of Unseen Tears: The Native American Boarding School Experience in Western New York , a 30-minute documentary about how Native American families in Western New York continue to feel the impact of the Thomas Indian School and the Mohawk Institute. Survivors speak of traumatic separation from their families, abuse, and a systematic assault on their language and culture. Special Guests Chief Harry Wallace and the Honorable Lizbeth Gonzalez (SBU Alumnus) to lead a discussion with the audience .

Experiences with Epidemiology
Guest Speaker: Dr. Paul Kelton, History Department

Join us for a dynamic conversation with SBU History Professor, Dr. Paul Kelton about the unique perspective of examining Epidemics from the point of view and experience of Native American communities. Dr. Kelton's research areas of interest include Indigenous peoples of North America, environment and medicine, early American history. He is also the author of two books: Epidemics and Enslavement and Cherokee Medicine, Colonial Germs. This lecture is sure to be interesting, especially in our current lived experience with COVID-19.
