If you would like to speak with a counselor, call us at (631) 632-6720 or use our online self-scheduler to make an appointment for a telecounseling initial consultation. 

Help for students with urgent mental health needs is available 24/7. At any time of day or night, you can call 631-632-6720. If you identify your need as urgent, you will be connected to a counselor who can help. If you are calling outside of our regular hours (M-F, 8am-4pm), you can be connected to a counselor through CAPS After Hours. After calling 631-632-6720, please press 2 to speak with a counselor.

Please make sure to tell us immediately if you are experiencing an urgent mental health need (examples include: if you are feeling unsafe; if you have recently been sexually assaulted; if you have recently experienced the death of a loved one; if you are having thoughts about hurting yourself or someone else). 

If you are calling with a non-urgent situation, we will obtain your availability for a call back ideally on the same day, at a time when you will have enough time and privacy to be able to talk openly with the counselor. When you speak with one of our counselors, you will be asked to share whatever it is that you are experiencing so that we can best assist you. We encourage you to be as open and honest as possible so that we can get a clear understanding of how we can help. We also encourage you to ask questions so that when the phone call has ended, you are clear on the next steps regarding your situation.

Together we will decide what should be the best course of care. Brief individual counseling, group counseling, and psychiatry are some of the services we offer at CAPS. We also make referrals to a wide range of other services both on and off campus.
