Bilingual Education Extension
Advanced Graduate Certificate
Stony Brook University’s new 16-credit advanced graduate certificate leads to the NYSED Bilingual Education Extension Annotation. It is designed for those who hold an appropriate NYSED certificate and are fluent, bilingual (English/Spanish) speakers. The program provides the knowledge and skills necessary to teach effectively in English and Spanish in New York State schools.

Teacher Education at Stony Brook University
Unlike traditional models, Stony Brook does not have a free-standing education school. Instead, we have developed a "distributed model" in which the individual teacher education programs are housed in the relevant academic departments. This allows students to take advantage of the strengths of these academic departments, while overall responsibility for the administration of programs lies with Distributed Teacher and Leader Education (D-TALE) program. Master's Degree Options
All of the courses in this program can be applied to the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies. "SPN" courses may be applied to the Master of Arts in Spanish. Prospective students should contact the repective directors of each master's program for more information.
The program is open to fluent speakers of Spanish who hold an initial, professional or permanent K-12 teaching certification (or are enrolled in such a program leading to such a certification) in any field except ENL/ESL/TESOL or a Language Other Than English (LOTE). Candidates who hold Spanish certification, for example, are not eligible for this program. Candidates holding other types of licenses valid in the K-12 setting may also be eligible; contact the program director for details.
