Appointment of Braden Hosch as Vice President for Educational and Institutional Effectiveness

September 29, 2022

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce that Braden Hosch, Associate Vice President for Institutional Research, Planning, and Effectiveness, will serve in a new, expanded role as Vice President for Educational and Institutional Effectiveness.

In this new role, Dr. Hosch will report to both the President and Provost. The addition of a reporting line to the Provost will further strengthen data-driven decision making in our academic mission and formalize Dr. Hosch’s already close partnership with academic affairs. As a dual reporting line, his office will maintain support to all divisions that report to the president, and will align institutional effectiveness with educational effectiveness. This arrangement will enhance our ability to comprehensively evaluate and strengthen our position as a flagship, AAU institution that serves as a first-choice destination for students, faculty, and staff.

This change supports a number of critical functions for the university, most timely being our Middle States accreditation process. This new vice president position will oversee the Office of Educational Effectiveness, which is leading a number of efforts related to accreditation, assessment, and other key academic outcomes.

Dr. Hosch has transformed institutional effectiveness functions at the university. He has overseen the integration of institutional research and business intelligence on the campus; led adoption of a data governance structure at Stony Brook University; and served as Chair of the University's Data Governance Council for the last five years. In addition, he has published on topics as diverse as how to create a university data strategy, the impact of big data on decision-making in higher education, the impact of motivation on student learning outcome assessment, benchmarking sources in higher education, and inconsistencies in how institutions determine student living costs.

He is also well-recognized as a national leader in higher education institutional research and effectiveness. He is the Treasurer for the Board of Directors of the Association for Institutional Research (AIR) and also serves on the Data Policy Advisory Committee for the Commission for Information Management and Analysis (CIMA) of the Association of Public and Land Grant Universities (APLU). Dr. Hosch has previously served as a national educator on Federal data collection policies and practices, the Finance Chair of the Steering Committee for the Northeast Association for Institutional Research (NEAIR), an appointed member of the National Postsecondary Education Cooperative, and an Executive Committee member for CIMA.  He holds a PhD and an MA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, an MA from the University of Texas-Dallas, and a BA from Swarthmore College.

Please join us in congratulating Braden on this new role, and thanking him for his service to Stony Brook.

Sincerely,

Maurie McInnis
President

Carl Lejuez
Provost
