Richard Leakey Memorial Conference June 5-9

May 23, 2023

To the Campus Community,

On behalf of the Turkana Basin Institute and the National Geographic Society, it is my honor to invite you to join in celebrating the life and legacy of the late Dr. Richard E. Leakey, esteemed Stony Brook University professor, acclaimed conservationist and one of the seminal paleontologists of our time.

From Monday, June 5 through Friday, June 9, we are proud to be co-hosting the international memorial conference, Africa: The Human Cradle, commemorating Dr. Leakey’s life and his extraordinary achievements in African Prehistory. The first day of the conference begins at 2 pm in the Charles B. Wang Center and will feature presentations focused on fossil evidence from Ethiopia, Kenya and South Africa. At 5 pm, Dr. Louise Leakey, Richard’s daughter and a revered paleontologist and Stony Brook Research Professor, will present “Six Decades: The Search for Fossils at Lake Turkana” in the Recital Hall of the Staller Center.

To attend Dr. Louise Leakey’s lecture, please RSVP here. If you would like to attend the conference, please register here by Friday, May 26. For those not on campus, the conference will be live-streamed.

It is certainly a privilege for Stony Brook to host this special program honoring the life and achievements of Richard Leakey, which you can learn more about at the conference website detailing the week-long series of events.

I hope you can join us during this special week. A transformational scholar, colleague and friend, Richard is an inspiration to the next generation of paleontologists and anthropologists. He changed the way we think about ourselves and, for us, contributed so much to Stony Brook University.

Warm regards,
