Political Science Undergraduate Awards and Scholarships

Below are the criteria for scholarships and awards given by the Department of Political Science. Applications are accepted annually for each award, due by the posted deadline. If a deadline has passed, applications may not be submitted and applicants will have to wait until the following year to apply.

Alumni Pre-Law Scholarship

Scholarship Information

Application Closed

  1. Must be a  Junior (U3) or Senior (U4).
  2. Minimum GPA of 3.00 for at least two years.
  3. Demonstrate financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid.
  4. Demonstrate intent on attending law through one or more of the following, and supported by a reference:
  • Be an active participant in the Pre-Law student club.
  • Take law related courses.
  • Work in the legal industry before or during attendance at Stony Brook.

Recipient must maintain award criteria for scholarship eligibility.

$1,000
  • If a junior, $500 each semester of the following academic year
  • If a graduating  senior, a lump sum

Davidson Family Scholarship

Scholarship Information

Application Closed

  1. Must be a  Junior (U3) or Senior (U4).
  2. Minimum GPA of 3.00.
  3. Preferably majoring in Political Science.
  4. Veteran of the armed forces of the United States or Coastguard that has served on active duty.

Recipient must maintain award criteria for scholarship eligibility.

$2,000
  • If a junior, $1,000 the following spring and fall
  • If a senior, $2,000 the following spring

Martin B. Travis Political Science Award

Award Information

Application Closed

  1. Must be a Senior (U4).
  2. Maintain a high GPA.
  3. Major in Political Science
  4. Demonstrate strong analytical and communication skills, as well as high moral and ethical values,  as evidenced by a reference.
  5. Be accepted into a law school following graduation from Stony Brook.
$3,000
  • Paid in a lump sum

Patricia A. Gramer Memorial Scholarship

Scholarship Information

Application Closed

  1. Must be a Junior (U3)
  2. Minimum GPA of 3.25.
  3. Major in Political Science.
  4. Full time matriculation.
  5. Must be writing a senior honors thesis in Political Science (POL 495 and POL 496).

Recipient must maintain award criteria for scholarship eligibility.

$2,000
  • $1,000 each semester of the recipient's senior year

Patricia E. Herman Memorial Award

Award Information

Application Closed

  1. Must be a  Junior (U3) or Senior (U4).
  2. Maintain GPA of 3.00.
  3. Major in Political Science.
  4. Express interest in urban planning and/or environmental issues.
  5. Produce a project of significant originality and insight,  as evidenced by a reference.
  6. Preference given to students interested in public sector career.

Recipient must maintain award criteria for scholarship eligibility.

$2,000
  • If a junior, $1,000 each semester of the following academic year
  • If a graduating  senior, a lump sum

  1. Must be a  Freshman (U1), Sophomore (U2), or Junior  (U3).
  2. Minimum GPA of 3.00.
  3. Major in Political Science.
  4. Full time matriculation.
  5. Demonstrate financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid.
  6. Demonstrate potential and promise in subject matter, as evidenced by a reference.

Recipient must maintain award criteria for scholarship eligibility.

  • $1,500 each semester of the following academic year

Scholarship Information

Application Closed

  1. All class standings eligible (U1-U4)
  2. Minimum GPA of 3.00.
  3. Major in Political Science.
  4. Full time matriculation.
  5. Demonstrate potential and promise in governmental studies, as evidenced by a reference.
  6. Be active in campus activities.

Recipient must maintain award criteria for scholarship eligibility.

$500
  • If a freshman, sophomore, or junior, $250 each semester of the following academic year
  • If a graduating senior, a lump sum
