Global Academic Program

6 week program

About the Program

The Global Academic Program (GAP) allows newly admitted and visiting international students the opportunity to enroll in undergraduate academic courses at Stony Brook.  Students can choose between an in-person program or a fully online program.

Stony Brook University has a wide variety of courses across multiple academic departments and disciplines. Admission to some courses is subject to department review, in order to ensure that students have satisfied the course entry requirements.  Newly admitted students can begin completing their general education requirements during the summer, and can work with academic advisors to select the best courses for their degree progress.

In-Person GAP

Students participating in In-Person GAP are required to enroll in a minimum of 6 credits:

    • At least 3 credits must be in-person or hybrid-learning classes.
    • Students may also choose to enroll in one 3-credit online course.

In-Person GAP is a residential program and students are required to live on-campus.  Tuition-paying GAP students will be awarded a $2,000 Housing Scholarship* for the summer.  GAP students are eligible to participate in all GSI cultural excursions.

*Conditions may apply.  See the Tuition and Fees page for details.

Online GAP

Students participating in Online GAP are required to enroll in a minimum of 3 credits.  Students can choose from a wide selection of both synchronous and asynchronous online courses to fit their schedule. Online GAP students are not eligible for an F-1 student visa for summer study.
