Become a GSA

COVID-19 UPDATE:  Due to the escalating COVID-19 situation in New York, GSI is moving to an online-only format for Summer 2020, and the GSA program has been canceled. GSAs will return in Summer 2021! 

We are seeking exemplary students to serve as Global Student Ambassadors (GSAs) during Summer Session 2!

This position is integral in supporting the efforts of the Office of Global Affairs’ Global Summer Institute (GSI) program. GSAs will work both independently and in a team setting to welcome and support incoming, short-term international students to Stony Brook University.

GSAs serve as a peer and mentor for our incoming international students and facilitate with their orientation and adjustment to campus.  Hours are flexible, but some evenings and weekends may be required.

We are now accepting applications in Handshake for all three positions.  Applications will be reviewed and students contacted for interviews in April 2020.



There are three types of GSA positions available: Volunteers, Teaching Assistants, and Team Leaders.

Unpaid position, ~10 hours/week. 

  • Plan and facilitate at least 1 gathering/social event per week
  • Assist with check-ins and orientation as needed
  • Participate in pre-planned social activities as needed
  • Attend weekly GSA meeting with Team Leader
  • Check SBU email on a regular basis

Teaching Assistants

Paid position during TA hours for the Global Certificate Program , plus volunteer duties as outlined above.  3+ positions available depending on enrollment. 

  • Serve as TA to the Global Certificate Program (GCP)
  • Sit in GCP classes M-Th 9:00 - 12:00, plus Special Lectures
  • Facilitate classroom discussion and assist instructor as needed
  • Fulfill all volunteer duties listed above

Team Leaders

Paid position during TA and office hours as outlined by supervisor.  2-3 positions available depending on enrollment. 

  • Act as team lead for group of up to 15 GSAs
  • Attend weekly meetings with GSA supervising staff
  • Help manage volunteers and coordinate scheduling
  • Fulfill all teaching assistant duties listed above
  • Fulfill all volunteer duties listed above



  • Native or near-native English speaker/ high level of English proficiency
  • Actively participate and generate enthusiasm at events
  • Must be in good academic standing
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to plan and facilitate social programming independently
  • Be able to navigate public transportation including local buses, LIRR, and SBU bus routes
  • Ability to be reliable, responsible, and flexible

  • Global Ambassador certificate of participation at the conclusion of the program
