Lea comes to the PhD program with fourteen years teaching experience at all levels. She completed her Masters in Teaching at the University of California, and her Masters in English at Hunter College. She is interested in all forms of cultural expression in African American literature and postcolonial literature, including folkloric traditions, sartorial expression, and gestural performance, especially in the ways to which these speak to a hybridity in identity formation.
