Electrical Engineering BE Program
Electrical engineering, although as a discipline barely 100 years old, has already
profoundly influenced our civilization. It has been the main force behind the birth
and growth of disciplines like electronics, computers, and communications. It has
made an outstanding impact on almost every area of science and engineering as well
as on our everyday lives. The list of subjects of electrical engineering is long and
includes electronic circuits, communications, control systems, information processing,
computer design, superconductors, solid-state electronics, electromagnetics, microwave
technology, power electronics, medical imaging systems, signal processing, robotics
and automation, lasers and electro-optics, radar and antennas, consumer electronics,
and vehicular technology.
The electrical engineering curriculum at Stony Brook is designed to educate students for entry level positions in industry and other engineering organizations, or prepare them for graduate studies. It also provides students with broad exposure to other disciplines allowing for subsequent education in other professions, as well as promoting self-learning and personal development in order to excel in our rapidly advancing society. The curriculum is composed of four groups of courses. The first group prepares students with a strong foundation in physical sciences and mathematics; the second expounds the fundamentals of design and analysis of systems; the third teaches specialized areas of electrical engineering; the fourth, from humanities and social sciences, exposes students to contemporary issues and awareness of diverse cultures.
An important ingredient of the program is the design aspect of electrical engineering. There are several required courses with laboratory components, where students conduct experiments and characterize devices to expand upon concepts studied in theoretical courses. Students design, develop, and test systems and circuits, employ computers to analyze, model, and understand important concepts, and in general, learn to solve engineering problems.
