Stony Brook’s IEEE-Eta Kappa Nu Wins Outstanding Chapter Award

Electrical and Computer Engineering Honor Society Chapter Nationally Recognized

February 6, 2017

IEEE-HKNThe Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has awarded Stony Brook’s Theta Mu chapter of IEEE-Eta Kappa Nu (IEEE-HKN) with the Outstanding Chapter Award for 2015–2016. Stony Brook’s IEEE-HKN chapter, with approximately 80 ECE students, holds a number of events and workshops aimed at promoting ECE, giving students professional development opportunities, and benefitting the community.

In the 2015–2016 academic year, these events included an admitted students day to welcome new students, a student-professor mixer to help students get to know their professors, a tour of a local company, and a number of events aimed at helping students (including course review sessions and a lecture series aimed at helping new students get acquainted with engineering disciplines). Additionally, the group held charitable events to raise funds for a scholarship in honor of a former member.

"It is great to receive this honor for the hard work that the chapter and its eboard put in last academic year, especially under the leadership of past president Zahraa Krayem,” says Nick Riviezzo, President of the chapter and a senior computer engineering major. “This year we hope to continue the dedication to serving the engineers and the rest of the community here at Stony Brook."

IEEE recognizes approximately 20 chapters each year with this award, based on how well a chapter’s activities “improve professional development; raise instructional and institutional standards; encourage scholarship and creativity; provide a public service; and generally further the established goals of IEEE-HKN.” Stony Brook’s IEEE-HKN chapter has won this award two other recent times, for the academic years 2011–2012 and 2009–2010.
“It is definitely nice to see that the work being accomplished here is being recognized,” says junior electrical engineering major Michael D’Agati, the chapter treasurer. “It makes us want to continue to provide our services to our many members and it gives us joy to watch them succeed.”
