Message from the Chair

Welcome to the Stony Brook Chemistry Department!

SW

The Stony Brook Department of Chemistry has a long history of conducting research and teaching at the interface of chemistry with fields such as biology, medicine, materials science and engineering.  This tradition was established by Nobel Laureate Paul Lauterbur, who made his pioneering discoveries in Magnetic Resonance Imaging at Stony Brook.  As part of the diverse Stony Brook community, you will benefit from the wide range of opportunities found at a large research university while enjoying the personalized attention and sense of community that exists within our Department.  Graduates go on to pursue traditional careers in industry, academic research, and teaching, as well as in fields such as investment banking, technology licensing, science writing & publishing, business development, and entrepreneurship.

We have almost 200 students in our graduate program whose training is aided by the NIH-funded Chemical Biology Training Program (CBTP) and the NSF-funded Research Traineeship (NRT) Award Harnessing the Data Revolution.  Many faculty members have cross-appointments and collaborations with departments in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS), the Renaissance School of Medicine (SOM) and the neighboring Brookhaven National Lab (BNL).  BNL is a federally-funded, 5,265-acre research laboratory offering state-of-the art facilities for nanoscience, chemistry, and energy including the Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN), the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS II), and the proposed Electron Ion Collider (EIC).

The department is also home to numerous institutes and centers which serve as hubs for interdisciplinary research.  Relevant examples include the Institute of Chemical Biology and Drug Discovery (ICB&DD), the DOE-funded Energy Frontier Research Center for Mesoscale Transport Properties (m2m), the Center for Advanced Technology in Integrated Electric Energy Systems (CIEES), the Center for Advanced Study of Drug Action (CASDA), and the Institute for Energy Sustainability and Equity (IESE).  The Department is also the academic home to many members of the Laufer Center for Physical and Quantitative Biology (LCPQB), and the DOE-funded Energy Frontier Research Center GENESIS.

With a world-class faculty, a community of students with diverse interests, and state-of-the-art facilities, Stony Brook is an ideal place for developing a rewarding career in modern chemistry!  We are confident that you will find Stony Brook a stimulating place to work and study.  Please explore our web site and contact us for further information..
