Payroll Information
Stony Brook University employees are paid every two weeks on Wednesday.
All New York State employees are paid on a two-week lag payroll. That means that you are paid for a two-week pay period, beginning on a Thursday through the second Wednesday, two weeks after the conclusion of that pay period.
Information Specific to Faculty Hires
Most full-time faculty at Stony Brook are hired on academic year (10-month) appointments.
Fall Hires
Most full-time faculty on an academic year appointment at Stony Brook are hired at the start of the fall term.
These faculty will be paid throughout the entire calendar year on a 26-pay (CAL-10) pay basis. In other words, you will get 26 paychecks over the course of the 52-week year: one paycheck every two weeks.
For faculty on this schedule, payroll always begins September 1, regardless of the day of the week that date falls on.
Because of the two-week lag mentioned above, the first paycheck for new faculty starting in fall 2026 will be September 23, 2026.
That first paycheck will include pay earned from September 1 to September 9. The first paycheck for the full two-week period (September 10 - 23) will be issued October 7.
Spring Hires
Some full-time academic-year faculty are hired at the start of the spring term.
After the end of the spring term, these faculty will be moved to the same pay schedule (technically known as the CAL-10 or 26-Pay pay basis) as fall hires.
This means that faculty hired at the start of the spring will receive their final paycheck for the spring on June 16, 2027.
Payroll will begin again for the fall on September 1. However, because of the two-week lag mentioned above, the first paycheck for the first pay period will be issued on September 22, 2027.
After this transition, faculty hired in the spring will be paid every two weeks throughout the year for as long as they continue to be employed at Stony Brook.
