Workplace Accommodations
At Stony Brook University, we value all students, employees, and job candidates as individuals, and we welcome the variety of experiences they bring to our institution. To support an inclusive environment and ensure equal employment opportunities, we provide reasonable workplace accommodations.
An employee may request a workplace accommodation based on:
-
A Medical Condition or Disability: Including underlying health conditions and temporary or permanent disabilities, in alignment with University Policy and in compliance with guidance from the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
-
Religious Observances: To support sincerely held religious beliefs, practices, or observances.
Our Commitment to Non-Discrimination These accommodations are a vital part of our strict non-discrimination policy. Stony Brook University prohibits discrimination and harassment based on race, color, or national origin, including shared ancestry or characteristic, religion, sex, pregnancy, familial status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, genetic information, disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law with regard to any employment practices. This includes, but is not limited to: recruitment, hiring, selection for training, promotion, transfer, compensation, job assignments, benefits, and/or other terms, conditions, or privileges of employment.

Request an Accomodation
The Employee Accommodation Process is a collaborative, interactive workflow managed by the Office of Equity & Access (OEA) to support staff members seeking workplace adjustments for disability or religious reasons. Through this process, employees, supervisors, Human Resources, and the OEA work together to resolve workplace barriers using the dedicated ADA Accommodation Request Form or Religious Accommodation Form.
What is a Religious Accomodation?
A religious accommodation is a workplace adjustment, such as a schedule change or dress code modification, that resolves a conflict between an employee's sincerely held religious beliefs and their job requirements. OEA facilitates a collaborative interactive process between the employee and their supervisor to identify specific workplace barriers and brainstorm appropriate solutions.

What is an ADA Accomodation?
An Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accommodation is a workplace modification designed for employees with documented physical or mental impairments who face barriers in performing their job functions or accessing benefits. If your medical condition is creating difficulties at work, OEA is here to help you navigate the request process and find effective, reasonable solutions.
