Shallow Blue Empire book cover

Congratulating Professor Tamara Fernando on the publication of her absolutely beautiful book!

In Shallow Blue Empire, Professor Tamara Fernando traces how British colonial extraction reshaped pearl-diving regions from the Persian Gulf to Sri Lanka and Myanmar between 1850 and 1930. The book reveals how imperial rule transformed migration, race, caste, and technology—while remaining dependent on the expertise of local divers—until environmental collapse and cultured pearls ended the natural pearl trade. Centering human labor, marine life, and fragile ecologies, Shallow Blue Empire offers a powerful rethinking of the global pearl economy and the communities that sustained it.
