Biology education, science assessment, assessment technologies, problem solving processes,
science learning, novice-expert studies, evolution education, textbooks and knowledge

CSM 650: Introduction to measurement and assessment in science education (Ph.D); Biology 201: Organisms to Ecosystems (Undergraduate).
Recent work has focused on science learning, with attention directed at biological concepts such as natural selection and evolution. Additional studies have examined novice and expert reasoning strategies, psychometric evaluation of education instruments, science teacher belief revision and professional development, conceptual structuring of scientific understanding, and the comparative efficacy of educational innovations. Currently, several projects are focusing on developing and evaluating machine-learning models for automated assessment of complex scientific practices, such as biological explanation (see www.evograder.org).
Dr. Nehm has served as Principal Investigator on research grants from the National Science Foundation's EAR, CCLI, TUES, CAREER and REESE programs. As PI, he has been awarded more than $2 Million in external funding.
Dr. Nehm's major awards include a CAREER award from the National Science Foundation, a teaching award from Berkeley, and a mentoring award from CUNY. In 2013-14 Dr. Nehm was named an Education Mentor in the Life Sciences by the National Academies. Dr. Nehm currently serves as Associate Editor for the journal Evolution Education and Outreach, Associate Editor for the journal Science & Education, and serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Research in Science Teaching, the Journal of Science Teacher Education, CBE-Life Sciences Education, and the Journal of Science Education and Technology. He also serves on the research advisory boards of several national science education projects, and has served as Panel Chair for several NSF programs. Dr. Nehm is collaborating with six other universities on the Automated Analysis of Constructed Response (AACR) research project and a study of Chinese biology teachers with Xin Wei (China). Dr. Nehm also has several active projects with Dr. Minsu Ha.
