Extent, Scope, and Content Note
The collection is comprised of 26 linear ft. of papers, correspondence, and materials related to Charles F. Wurster's work with Environmental Defense Fund, his research, and teaching activities. Materials date from 1963 to 2005. The papers focus on two areas: legal action against DDT, Aldrin Dieldrin, and other insecticides and the activities of Environmental Defense. Wurster’s writings and correspondence as well as subject files complete the collection.  The writing series contains research articles, editorials, statements and testimony. Frequent topics include:  the effects of pesticides on the terrestrial and marine ecosystems. The papers are housed in 67 boxes arranged in 12 series.

Arrangement and Processing Note
Processed by Meredith Bouchard in 2005.
Finding aid revised and updated in July 2015 and April 2019 by Kristen J. Nyitray.

Series 1:  Correspondence, 1967-1999, bulk 1970s [1.5 linear ft]
Arrangement: Alphabetical by correspondent’s last name
The correspondence series contains letters and notes from colleagues, congressmen and concerned citizens.  Information requests, notes of thanks and lecture requests are frequent topics. Personalities in science and politics expressed interest in the Environmental Defense Fund’s activities against pesticides; among them are: Robert F. Kennedy, James Watson, Otis G. Pike, David R. Obey and Daniel Patrick Moynihan. The highest concentration of correspondence comes from Lorrie Otto, a Wisconsin conservationist; Robert van den Bosch, Professor of Entomology at UC Berkeley; and the executives of Environmental Defense.

Series 2:  Biography and Writings, 1966-2004 [2 linear ft]
Arrangement: Chronological by format
The biographical section contains curriculum vitae, and publicity in the form of newspaper clippings and awards programs and flyers. The writings section collects research articles, magazine articles, editorials, testimony, and book reviews in published and manuscript form.  Publications represented include: Science, Biochimica et Biophysica Acta, Marine Environmental Research and Environmental Contamination and Toxicology.

Series 3:  Environmental Defense Fund-Board of Trustees, 1967-2005 [6.5 linear ft]
Arrangement: Divided into 2 sub-series: Correspondence/Memoranda and Minutes
The minutes deal with policy and procedure as well as case approval procedures and decisions on proposed litigation activities. Memoranda range in topic from EDF structural and personnel policies, to publicity strategies, and fundraising.

Series 4:  Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees, 1969-1987 [3 linear ft]
Arrangement: Divided into 2 sub-series: Correspondence/Memoranda and Minutes
Executive Committee memos concern EDF’s programs, personnel, organizational structure, and case approval requests. Beginning in the 1980s, the Executive Committee minutes are filed with other committees in the Board of Trustees meeting packets.

Series 5:  Environmental Defense Fund-General Administration, 1972-2003 [2 linear ft]
Arrangement: Divided into 4 sub-series: Public Information/Communications, Fundraising/Development, Inter-office bulletins and Videos
The administration series covers all daily operative and management activities. This small series covers inter-office communications, discussions about fundraising matters, and published information aimed at the general public.

Series 6:  Environmental Defense Fund-Programs, 1978-2005 [1 linear ft]
Arrangement: by format; reports arranged chronologically by program
The program files are memoranda and project reports from the Toxics, Water, and Energy programs.

Series 7:  DDT, 1966-1972 [5 linear ft]
Arrangement: Divided into 3 sub-series: litigation and hearings files, DDT in the media, and research documents
Assembled here in are the affidavits, testimony, and other court documents created from the early cases that argued the DDT question.  Also included are media clippings documenting the local coverage of the trials and debates on the use of DDT.

Series 8:  Aldrin/Dieldrin, 1970-1974 [2 linear ft]
Arrangement: Divided into 2 sub-series: cancellation hearings and research documents
Documentation of the cancellation hearings contains briefs, experts’ statements and related correspondence on the issuance of tolerance limits for aldrin and dieldrin.  The research documents are journal articles arranged by subject.

Series 9:  Mirex, 1971-1975 [1 linear ft]
Arrangement: Divided by format
Mirex contains court documents, clippings, impact statements and research articles surrounding the proposed cancellation of mirex and the USDA’s Fire Ant Eradication Program.

Series 10:  Pesticides, 1964-1974 [2 linear ft]
Arrangement: Alphabetical by subject
This series is a collection of subject files on the general use and regulation of pesticides as well as samples of information about other pesticides including 2,4,5-T, heptachlor and chlordane.

Series 11:  Subject Files, 1964-2003 [3 linear ft]
Arrangement: Alphabetical by subject
This series collects brief information on many subjects in various formats. The largest file groups are those dealing with carcinogens, saccharin, and mercury. Recurrent formats are media clippings and reprints.
