Each Fall Semester The Latin American and Caribbean Studies Center (LACS) and The
Hispanic Heritage Month Committee (HHMC) offer university-wide scholarships for eligible
students.
The A. Sanchez Construction Corporation Scholarship for Undergraduate Academic Achievement
is a $2,500 prize awarded annually in recognition of an undergraduate student attending
Stony Brook University who has shown outstanding academic achievement, scholarly promise
and service and leadership to the community. Latino/Latina juniors and first semester
seniors in the College of Arts and Sciences with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA are
eligible to apply. The application requires a current undergraduate transcript, C.V.
indicating any relevant academic prizes, community and work experiences, two faculty
letters of recommendation, and a brief (2-page maximum) essay that explains your accomplishments,
major academic interests and how your current studies relate to your future professional
or intellectual development. Application deadline for 2022 awards is 4:30 pm Friday,
October 21, 2022. Click here for an application and submission instructions.
Additional awards are also made available through the Hispanic Heritage Month Committee
In New York State, public fellowship aid is scarce and we must actively encourage
under-represented minorities to attain an excellent Stony Brook education. The Latin
American and Caribbean Studies Center (LACS) has already founded two such fellowship
programs. The Partnership Fund for Latino Scholarship, has been helping deserving
students for more than a decade and the A. Sánchez Construction Corporation Scholarship,
since 2003, shows how Long Island businesses have assisted students with their generous
contributions.
LACS welcomes contributions and new scholarships honoring prominent Hispanics/Latinos,
as well as larger developmental opportunities in endowed chairs and research, and
outreach programs around such topics as Latino migration on Long Island and the challenges
for cultural awareness, public services, and human rights.
