Engineering Teaching Lab: Design and Build Activities – Middle School (6th to 8th grade)

Bring your classroom for a design and build experience through hands-on engineering, programming using mathematical and science tools.

Design and Build Labs Design and Build Labs

Activities are aligned to the following NYSSLS Performance Expectations:

  • MS-PS3-6. Make observations to provide evidence that energy can be transferred by electric currents.

  • MS-ETS1-1. Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution, taking into account relevant scientific principles and potential impacts on people and the natural environment that may limit possible solutions.

  • MS-ETS1-2. Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.

  • MS-ETS1-4. Develop a model to generate data for iterative testing and modification of a proposed object, tool, or process such that an optimal design can be achieved.

The Design and Build Labs are available Monday through Friday. A lab activity can begin as early as 8am.  All activities are 4–5 hours long (including break for lunch).

The pricing of a lab activity is $30/student (with a minimum charge of 15 students) and transportation must be provided by the district. The maximum capacity of one lab is 40 students.
