Faculty Mentoring

The College of Arts and Sciences is committed to supporting early career faculty and their professional development by connecting them with senior colleagues who can advise, coach, and guide them, and help them understand the context in which we operate as faculty within the College of Arts and Sciences. 

Faculty mentoring is both a formal and informal activity, and can address all aspects of academic life, from balancing professional and family obligations to advice about professional milestones that must be reached in order to advance. The goals of the College of Arts and Sciences faculty mentoring program include:

  • To help new faculty members acclimate to the formal and informal norms of the department, College of Arts and Sciences, and to Stony Brook University.
  • To foster effective research skills.
  • To advise on effective publishing strategies.
  • To encourage faculty to refine and expand their teaching strategies.
  • To foster the development of a productive balance between research, teaching, and service.
  • To guide faculty in their progression toward promotion and tenure.
  • To foster an atmosphere of collegiality and community.

Each early career faculty member will have an internal mentor within their department and an external mentorelsewhere in the university. Faculty should consult with their chairs to select appropriate mentors.  The Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs will be happy to assist faculty in finding appropriate mentor pairings.

Junior faculty and their mentors are encouraged to download the Timeline for Junior Faculty , which provides an overview of expectations and deadlines for each semester from hiring to tenure.
