The Fall New Student Housing Application will be available in the Housing Portal beginning at 10 AM on April 13, 2026.

All housing applications and related transactions are completed through the Housing Portal, which can be accessed using your NetID and password. Please note that you will not be able to log in to the Housing Portal until the day after you set up your NetID and password with the university.

Students can complete general application information prior to their designated room selection time frame.

The housing application consists of the following components:

  • Agreeing to the Terms of Occupancy, financial liability, and acknowledgments
  • Providing GradGuard renter’s insurance information and meal plan selection, as well as other campus partners’ requirements
  • Completing a questionnaire to help facilitate roommate matching
  • Selecting your room space

Please note that some students are not eligible to select their own room space, including new graduate students arriving earlier than August 1, Southampton Campus residents, Intensive English Center participants, International Academic Program participants, and new transfer students. Some first-year students may also be administratively assigned as long as they complete their housing application in full.

Housing Application Important Dates and Information

Where will I live?

New first-year students are housed within one of our three first-year communities: H, Mendelsohn, or Roosevelt. Most students live in double-occupancy, corridor-style rooms, economy three-person rooms, or temporary triple rooms, with a limited number of single rooms available in Roosevelt Community.

Students who are part of specific groups are housed as follows:

  • WISE Honors participants are encouraged to live in Keller Hall within Eleanor Roosevelt Community.
  • University Scholars participants are encouraged to live in Greeley Hall within Eleanor Roosevelt Community.
  • Yardi Scholars participants are encouraged to live in Wagner Hall within Eleanor Roosevelt Community.
  • International Student Pre-Orientation participants live in Eleanor Roosevelt Community.
  • Honors College and Simons STEM Scholars participants live in Yang Hall.
  • Gender Inclusive Housing (GIH) participants are housed in Benedict South Hall in H Community (double rooms).

When can I select a room?

First-year students can begin selecting their room after their assigned room selection start time and must complete their selection by Wednesday, June 10, at 4 PM.

Selection Start Dates & Times:

  • Wednesday, May 20, at 10 AM: Honors College, University Scholars, Yardi Scholars, Simons STEM Scholars, WISE Honors, and International Student Pre-Orientation (ISPO) participants
  • Wednesday, May 27, at 10 AM: Students eligible to select female-designated spaces
  • Thursday, May 28, at 10 AM: Students eligible to select Gender Inclusive Housing (GIH) spaces
  • Friday, May 29, at 10 AM: Students eligible to select male-designated spaces

Your room selection day and time is the first opportunity to access the Housing Portal and make a selection. After that time has passed, you can enter the portal during our selection windows, between 10:00 AM and 9:59 PM, to select.

Due to high demand for university housing, rooms may no longer be available for those who select closer to the application deadline. If this happens, please confirm in the Housing Portal your need of a housing assignment to complete your application. If you confirm a need for an assignment, rest assured that your application will still be considered complete, and you will receive a housing assignment at a later date. Your room will be assigned to you sometime prior to the start of the fall semester.

What spaces can I select?

First-year students will be able to select from our corridor-style housing first-year communities.

  • Gender Inclusive Housing participants can only select in Benedict South Hall.
  • Scholars, WISE Honors, Yardi Scholars, and ISPO participants can only select spaces in Wagner, Keller, or Greeley Halls in Roosevelt Community.
  • Honors College and Simons STEM Scholars can only select in Yang Hall.

Once you select a space, your room assignment is final. If you are experiencing a roommate conflict before move-in, please contact your community's Area Office and Residence Hall Director for further assistance. If you experience a roommate conflict after moving in, you can contact your Resident Assistant for assistance. A room change and swap period starts the third week of the semester, but options may be limited.

When do I move into my space?

See the Move-In Website for more details on preparing to move in and arrival dates.

Can I request a single room?

There are a limited number of single rooms for first-year students in Roosevelt Community. Please discuss this option with anyone supporting you financially, as single-occupancy rooms come with an additional cost. During your application, you may select a single room if one is available. If none are available, then you will not be able to select a single.

How will I select a roommate?

In the application:

  • You will answer questions about yourself and how you want your living environment.
  • You will be able to search for and communicate with other students who are applying.
  • You can create a group or join a group of two individuals, allowing either member to control your room assignment fully.  This is recommended for students who already know each other and are in close communication. If you give someone this control, your selection is final, even if they made the selection on your behalf.
  • You are not required to select a room with another student. You can still make your selection as an individual, and any vacant beds in your room will be available for other students to select.

Where will I live?

New graduate students are housed in Chapin and Schomburg Apartments.

When can I select a room?

New graduate students can begin selecting their room after their assigned room selection start time and must complete their selection by Thursday, June 18, at 4 PM.

Selection Start Dates & Times:

New International Graduate Students select at the following times:

      • Female/Gender-Inclusive Housing: Selection starts at 10 AM on June 11.
      • Male: Selection starts at 2 PM on June 11.

New Domestic Graduate Students select at the following times:

    • Home address is more than 100 miles (direct line) distance from Stony Brook University: Selection starts at 10 AM on June 15.
    • Home address is less than 100 miles (direct line) distance from Stony Brook University: Selection starts at 2 PM on June 15.

Your room selection day and time is the first opportunity to access the Housing Portal and make a selection. After that time has passed, you can enter the portal during our selection windows, between 10 AM and 9:59 PM, to select.

What spaces can I select?

New graduate students may select a space from among Chapin and Schomburg Apartments. You will only select a space for yourself in this process.

When do I move into my space?

See the Move-In Website for more details on preparing to move in and arrival dates.

How will I select a roommate?

In the application, you will answer questions about yourself and your preferred living environment. You can search for and connect with other students who are also applying for housing.

When selecting rooms, you’ll need to coordinate with your intended roommate:

  • One person must select the room and complete the booking first.
  • Once that booking is finalized, the second person can add the same room to their cart and complete their own booking.
  • If the second bed is taken before the second student finishes, you will need to wait for the next room change or swap period to request an adjustment. You cannot force another student out of a selected assignment.

Is housing available for transfer students?

All new transfer students can place a housing deposit by May 1 to indicate their interest in on-campus housing; however, they are not prioritized for on-campus housing. Spaces will be granted based on cancellations of other undergraduate students. Students with a farther home address from campus will have priority for housing.

When will I know if I have housing?

All new transfer students who submit a housing application by Wednesday, June 10, will receive an update by Wednesday, July 1, regarding their likelihood of receiving an on-campus assignment. Should space become available, most housing assignments will be finalized by Friday, July 24.

While completing the housing application, we strongly encourage students to simultaneously explore off-campus housing options. The Office of Commuter Student Services and Off-Campus Living offers helpful resources that may support your search.

Can I select my roommate or room type?

New transfer students are housed in continuing undergraduate residence halls where space is available by administrative assignment, which does not permit roommate or room type selections.

When do I move into my space?

See the Move-In Website for more details on preparing to move in and arrival dates.

Intensive English Center (IEC), International Academic Program (IAP), SUNY Korea, and SBIAHU Programs

Is housing available?

  • Intensive English Center Students: To be housed, you must place a housing deposit by May 1 and complete the IEC application. You can find housing information and the application steps directly in the IEC application. The program provides Campus Residences with a list of students who require on-campus housing based on the applications submitted to their office, and students are assigned accordingly. IEC students are assigned to spaces in our traditional corridor-style communities.
  • International Academic Program Students: To be housed, you must complete the "On-Campus Housing Intent" process in the Housing Portal by May 1 and the housing application by June 10. Students are primarily assigned to space in West Apartments, but some assignments may be made in suite-style residence halls pending demand.
  • SUNY Korea SBIAHU Students: To be housed, you must complete the "On-Campus Housing Intent" process in the Housing Portal by May 1 and the housing application by June 10. Most students are assigned to spaces in our continuing student areas, which include corridor, suite, and apartment-style residence halls.

Can I select my roommate or room type?

Students are housed through administrative placements and cannot choose their room or room type. Programs may collect interest in room type, and Campus Residences consider this information when making assignments.

When do I move into my space?

See the Move-In Website for more details on preparing to move in and arrival dates.

Gender Inclusive Housing (GIH) Information

Gender Inclusive Housing (GIH) is a housing option in which two or more students share a bedroom, suite, and/or apartment regardless of the student's sex, gender identity, or gender expression. In other words, this option allows for students of any gender identity to live together regardless of sex assigned at birth. Choosing to live in Gender Inclusive Housing means that residents will have roommates and/or suitemates of any gender identity. Residents in Gender Inclusive Housing are committed to creating and affirming a bias-free environment for everyone living in this community.  It is designed to create an environment that supports LGBTQ+ individuals and allies.

By choosing GIH, you are making a year-long commitment to the community, rather than specific individuals. Because plans and relationships can change, you should be comfortable sharing your space with anyone who is GIH-approved.

Note: If a vacancy occurs in your unit, it will be filled by another student who has also been approved for the GIH community.

  1. Visit the Housing Portal: Log in during the open sign-up period from Monday, April 13 at 10 AM until Thursday, May 14 at 4 PM.
  2. Sign the Agreement: You must review and sign the GIH Community Standards.
  3. Commit to the Environment: By signing, you affirm your commitment to a bias-free environment.

Once the process is live, please review all information carefully before submitting it. Once submitted, you have signed up to live in this community for the academic year. You will not be able to change rooms or swap rooms into gender-based male or female housing.

New first-year students in GIH will live in Benedict South, regardless of Undergraduate College or Honors Program affiliation. Students in Benedict South live in double rooms within a traditional corridor-style residence hall. If Benedict South fills, additional spaces may be available in Stimson Hall for returning residents.

New transfer and graduate students are housed in vacancies within a GIH suite or apartment in their respective housing locations.

Housing Cancellation Information

To cancel your upcoming reservation, log in to the Housing Portal. On the homepage, you will see a “2026-2027 Housing Agreement Cancellation Request” button.

Residents should wait to cancel until they are 100% sure they do not need housing for the upcoming year. See the cancellation deadlines below:
  • April 30 or earlier: $0
  • May 1 - June 30: $200
  • July 1 - July 31: $300
  • August 1 - August 22 (before moving in): $400
  • August 23 or later (before moving in): $500
For full information on cancellation, no-show (failure to cancel before your agreement starts), and termination policies, see our financial liability website.

Canceling your agreement will result in the forfeiture of any priority you had for university housing. Choosing to cancel the housing reservation will require you to join the on-campus housing waitlist if future housing is needed. Waitlist offers are solely made based on space availability and are not guaranteed. Depending on occupancy demand, some individuals may not be reached, and most offers occur during the spring semester.

You will most likely not have university housing. You can join the university housing waitlist through the Housing Portal to potentially receive an offer if spaces become available. However, please be aware that we cannot estimate when, or if, offers will be made, so you should continue exploring off-campus options. See our Housing Request/Waitlist website for more information on how to apply.

We recommend visiting the Commuter Student Services & Off-Campus Living website for more information. You can also contact their office directly for assistance at commuter_services@stonybrook.edu or 631-632-7353.
