Recognize exceptional faculty from early career and beyond

Outstanding Lecturer Award

The Provost’s Outstanding Lecturer Award recognizes significant and ongoing contributions to the university’s educational mission. It honors a full-time lecturer who has demonstrated excellence in teaching, service, and professional development in support of this mission.

Up to two awards of $2,000 each may be granted annually.

Applications will reopen in spring 2027.

The college or school dean's office must submit the final nomination packet.

All full-time lecturers who taught an in-person or online course during the current academic year, including summer, fall, or spring terms, provided they served as a primary instructor of record.

Selection Criteria

  • Evidence of effective course design, student-centered teaching, and meaningful integration of technology to enhance learning.
  • Contributions to the field of pedagogy through ongoing professional development, participation in educational research, and service to the department or university.

Selection Process

Nomination packages are reviewed by a committee of faculty and academic leaders with expertise in educational practices and teaching excellence.

Nomination Requirements

  • Nominations may be prepared by the Department or Academic Unit Chair, but must be submitted by the Dean’s Office. 
  • While there is no limit to the number of nominations the Dean’s Office may submit, units are strongly encouraged to rank nominees and submit only the most outstanding candidates.

Nomination Materials

  1. Nomination letter by the Department/Academic Unit Chair, not to exceed three pages.
  2. Letter of endorsement from the Dean, not to exceed three pages.
  3. Optional Letters of Support: Up to three letters from faculty, staff, or students within the university. Letters should not exceed three pages.
  4. Nominee's Nomination Package:
    1. Current CV, to include a list of all courses taught, at Stony Brook and elsewhere, over the past two academic years, including course number, title, topic, semester, description, and enrollment numbers;
    2. List of service on departmental and university governance and administrative committees with dates and duration of service;
    3. List of significant contributions to teaching and pedagogy;
    4. A statement on teaching (no more than two pages) outlining the lecturer's philosophy, principles, and values, and how these are implemented in the classroom. 

Outstanding Mentor Award

The Outstanding Mentor Award acknowledges senior faculty for their exceptional dedication to mentoring other faculty, including those who are non-tenure track, pre-tenure, and/or mid-career. It celebrates mentors who provide guidance, foster professional growth, and support a healthy work-life balance.

Up to three awards of $2,000 each may be granted annually.

Applications will reopen in spring 2027.

The college or school dean's office must submit the final nomination packet.

  • Full-time faculty at the associate or full professor rank. 
  • Retired faculty.

Unit leaders and department chairs who are expected to mentor junior faculty, deans, and administrators in the dean's offices or the provost's office are not eligible for this award.

Selection Criteria

  • A demonstrated commitment to supporting the intellectual, creative, scholarly, and professional growth of faculty mentees, as evidenced by their success at the university, within professional societies, and on the national or international stage.
  • Evidence of sustained involvement in mentoring relationships that contribute to the career growth or personal development of faculty mentees.

Nomination Requirements

  • Nominations may be prepared by the Department or Academic Unit Chair, colleagues, or mentee(s), but must be submitted by the Dean’s Office. 
  • While there is no limit to the number of nominations the Dean’s Office may submit, units are strongly encouraged to rank nominees and submit only the most outstanding candidates.

This award is designed to recognize faculty who are mentoring other faculty members, including non-tenure track, pre-tenure, and mid-career mentees.

Nomination Materials

  1. Nomination letter.
  2. Letter of support, not to exceed three pages, from the department or academic unit chair.
  3. Letter of endorsement, not to exceed three pages, from the dean.
  4. Three letters of support, not to exceed three pages each, from past or present faculty mentees and/or colleagues.
  5. Nominee's current CV.

Stony Brook Trustees Faculty Award

The Stony Brook Trustees Faculty Award recognizes promising early-career faculty for their significant contributions to research, scholarship, and art-making. These awards provide funding opportunities to support and advance their work in these areas.

Up to five awards of $20,000 each may be granted annually.

Applications will reopen in spring 2027.

The college/school dean's office, or the center/institute director's office  must submit the final nomination packet.

Award period begins with the start of the new fiscal year, July 1.

  • Full-time second-term assistant professors, specifically those who have successfully completed their review process after being in residence at SBU for at least three years.
  • Early-career faculty whose research, creative activities, and scholarly achievements predict an exceptional trajectory.

Selection Process

Nomination packages are peer-reviewed by senior faculty experienced in research, scholarship, and art-making.

Selection Criteria

  • Achievement as a faculty member, particularly in research, publications, and scholarly or artistic contributions.
  • Institutional impact and the potential for continued professional growth.
  • Clarity, quality, and significance of long-term research, scholarship, or creative activity and their likely impact on the institution and the broader academic community.
  • Feasibility of the proposed work, including alignment of the budget with project objectives.

Nomination Requirements

  • Nominations must be submitted by deans or center/institute directors.
  • There is no limit to the number of nominations a dean or director may submit; however, units are strongly encouraged to rank nominees and submit only the most outstanding candidates.

Nomination Materials 

  1. Nomination letter: A letter, not to exceed three pages, from the dean or director that includes the nominee’s name, faculty appointment date at SBU, a summary of the nominee’s qualifications, and specific examples of achievements such as publications, performances, monographs, and inventions, tailored to the nominee’s discipline.
  2. Letter of support: Not to exceed three pages, from the department/academic unit chair.
  3. Three letters of reference: One letter should come from an external referee, excluding former mentors. Letters should not exceed three pages.
  4. Nominee’s CV.
  5. Project Narrative (5-page limit, 12-point font, single-spaced; references excluded):
    1. The narrative should address the creative significance of the project, highlighting its importance and potential impact.
    2. It should provide a clear description of the project’s objectives, methods, and expected outcomes, explaining how the project aligns with the nominee’s broader scholarship program and demonstrating its contribution to ongoing research or creative work.
    3. It should specify which aspects of the project will be completed during the award period, and if necessary, include a timeline.
    4. A detailed budget should outline how the award funds will be allocated, including justifications for each item. (indirect/administrative or graduate tuition costs are not allowed).
    5. Additionally, the narrative should identify any additional funding sources, specifying the agency/program, the scope of work involved, and the overlap in budget and scope with this award.

Use of Funds

The funds are intended for research, scholarship, and creative art. This includes expenses such as materials and supplies, travel to research sites, student assistants, and professional development activities like conference registration and travel. Funds should be expended within one calendar year, and a no-cost extension for a second year requires justification before the end of the first year.

Compliance Regulations

Faculty must adhere to SBU rules regarding the use of human and animal subjects, biosafety, radioactive materials, patents, copyrights, export controls, and other relevant policies. Faculty are responsible for ensuring compliance and can obtain additional guidance from the Office of Sponsored Programs.

Reporting Requirements

Award recipients are required to submit a brief report (up to 2 pages) detailing the outcomes of the project within 60 days following the end of the award period. The report should be emailed to faculty_affairs@stonybrook.edu. When submitting the report, please include the award name and your name in the subject line for reference.
