If you have old courses in Brightspace, they may be removed soon
October 1, 2026
Please review old Brightspace courses to see if you need them
Starting this academic year, we will only retain the three most recent years of courses in Brightspace
Any courses that were imported to Brightspace from Blackboard as well as courses from spring 2022, fall 2022, winter 2023, and spring 2023 will be deleted.
Moving forward, we will continue to delete the oldest term at the end of the current term. So for example, at the end of the fall 2027 semester, we will delete courses from fall 2024. With some really important exceptions.
What this means for you as an instructor
We know not every course is taught every three years. You may have a course that you plan to teach again, even if it's been a few years since it was last offered.
You can request that courses be retained a bit longer under the following circumstances:
- Course content, assignments, and grading information are required for accreditation. These requests should be made at the department or school level.
- The course is being used as part of a package for a tenure-track faculty member who is actively going through the tenure review process.
- The course is taught less frequently than every two years.
- The course content is being used to develop a future course offering.
Individual faculty and academic units must make those requests by Friday, October 27.
If you don't meet those conditions, you can export your courses for your records. Bear in mind that the data you export will be in a format only Brightspace can read. If you do choose to export your courses and save them in Google Drive, keep an eye on your cloud storage.
What this means for program accreditation
We recognize that some accreditors require this information to be retained for longer than three years.
If your accreditation requires longer records retention, please make sure that we know to retain your records. We'll make sure that your courses are retained as long as your accreditor expects them to be available. Bulk requests should be made by the department chair or dean, or their designee.
