Celebrate the U.S. 250th with SUNY Research Fellowship
$20,000 award to support faculty projects related to U.S. democracy
The State University of New York is launching a faculty research fellowship for 2026-2027 to celebrate the United States' 250th birthday.
The fellowship will support faculty in engaging in public-focused research or creative activities that aim to promote a deeper understanding of the history of the United States, and the promises and tests of democracy. Projects focused on lesser-known histories are welcome.

Tenured and tenure-track faculty across disciplines are invited to apply.
The $20,000 award may be used to support extra service, course buyouts, or to hire research assistants related to researching, preserving or interpreting knowledge about U.S. democracy and sharing it with the public. Applications that include partnerships or collaborations with academic or non-academic institutions are encouraged.
Eligible expenses include travel, transportation, and per diem; collecting, preserving, or digitizing historical documents or artifacts; honoraria for non-SUNY presenters; creating professional development for K-12 and higher education faculty on research topics and resources; and public events, presentations, or exhibits.
Proposals require letters of support from your department chair and the provost.
