Thank you and an update about final grade submissions
May 21, 2026
Dear Faculty and Instructors,
Thank you so much for acting swiftly and thoughtfully to reduce the impact of the LIRR strike on our students and their remaining final exams. Many of you rallied to adjust plans, provide flexibility, and ensure our students would be able to take their exams, despite losing access to transportation.
In your efforts to be flexible for our students, you may be facing additional time pressures to submit final grades by the May 26 deadline.
To that end, we are able to extend the deadline to submit final grades for those whose final exams were affected by the strike. If you taught a course with a final exam scheduled Monday, May 18, to Wednesday, May 20, you can take up until 10 a.m. Monday, June 1, to submit your final grades. For courses without a final exam or exams held before Monday, May 18, the deadline to submit final grades remains Tuesday, May 26, at 11:59 p.m.
We have decided to grant these limited extensions given extenuating circumstances related to the strike; however, please note that timely submission of grades remains critically important to allow students to register for courses with pre-reqs, advance toward their degrees, and be cleared for graduation. It is crucial that grade submissions don't drift beyond the deadlines outlined here.
I know that exams for several courses gave students two weeks to complete make-up assignments. If those final assignments fall after June 1, please give those students an incomplete. Once their assignments are turned in and graded, please submit those grades as soon as you can to ensure students are not penalized.
The strike, coming at the end of final exams and the start of commencement ceremonies, came at a busy and stressful time of the year. The efforts made across the SBU community to support our students was truly remarkable. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Carl
