Announcing Stony Brook's AI Statement of Values in Teaching and Learning
May 8, 2026
Dear Stony Brook faculty and staff,
Earlier this year, the Office of the Provost convened a group of faculty, staff, and students to join the AI Teaching and Learning Advisory Council. As Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, I was honored to lead this group as they thought deeply and carefully about how our values of community, excellence, equity, collaboration, and innovation inform the ways we engage with AI in teaching and learning at Stony Brook.
The AI Teaching and Learning Advisory Council introduced a Statement of Values on AI in Teaching and Learning that we shared with the community for input late last semester. Many of you gave feedback, and we have used it to refine the statement. I am pleased to share it with you all today.
Statement of Values on AI in Teaching and Learning
This document complements current policies and statements, including:
- Responsible Use of Information Technology Resources
- Stony Brook Policy on Data and Data Access
- Stony Brook Sensitive Information and Classification Policy and
- Statement of Principles Guiding Informed and Responsible Adoption and Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence, presented by SCEDIT to the University Senate this week.
This statement reflects our values as a Stony Brook community, and reminds us to center those values as we confront and adapt to genAI. Equally important is what this statement is not: It does not suggest that there is a single solution for how faculty teach and support student learning. Instead, it allows for diverse perspectives and invites innovation, with guardrails, on how, if, or when to use AI.
The statement's goal is to help each of us ensure that if we use AI, we do so effectively, transparently, ethically, and in support of innovation and excellence.
Thank you again for your deep and thoughtful engagement on this important question.
Sincerely,
Amy Cook
Vice Provost for Academic Affairs
