Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T)

The Stony Brook MAT Program in Physics has been named one of the nation’s most outstanding physics teacher preparation programs by the Physics Teacher Education Coalition (PhysTEC). In six of the past seven years, we’ve graduated five or more physics teachers – a mark recognized by the American Physical Society and the American Association of Physics Teachers, and one that places Stony Brook among the top five universities in the country for training and producing physics teachers. Requiring a BS or BA in physical science or engineering ensures our graduates truly understand the physics they teach. Physics teachers on Long Island and the surrounding region generally enjoy favorable working conditions and competitive salaries.

This degree prepares students with a BA in a physical science or engineering for New York State certification as a secondary school teacher. The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is formally offered by the School of Professional Development and is not part of the Physics Graduate Program.
