Terms and Conditions by Semester
Fall - Spring Terms
All meal plans selected are ANNUAL (fall and spring) agreements. Students are billed for a new meal plan each semester. Meal plans are non-transferable and are for the use of the meal plan holder only. Sharing meal plan funds is not permitted. By signing up for an account, you agree to receive email notifications regarding your meal plan.
In order for the meal plan to remain tax-exempt, the following conditions must be met:
- The meal plan is non-transferable and is for the individual use of the student to whom it is issued.
- Food and beverage items purchased are for the immediate consumption of the student to whom the plan was issued.
- Meal Plan funds are non-refundable.
- Dining Dollars rollover from the summer to fall, fall to winter and winter to spring semester.
- Meal plans do not roll over from one academic year to another.
- Meal swipes, guest passes and block meals do not rollover and must be used by the end of each semester.
- The final day to use Dining Dollars is Commencement Day of the spring semester. Any remaining balance after this date will be forfeited.
Requirements for Resident Students
All undergraduate students who reside in the residence halls and who are in their first or second semester of enrollment at Stony Brook are required to enroll in a resident meal plan, regardless of the residence hall in which they reside. Resident students, who live in a residence hall or area designated as non-cooking, must enroll in a resident meal plan regardless of class year or tenure at Stony Brook.
Commuter Students
Commuter students are not required to be on a meal plan. If a commuter student selects a commuter or resident meal plan, the same terms and conditions apply.
Waivers and Medical Exemptions
Meal plan enrollment may be waived on a religious or medical basis only. Request for a waiver must be made in writing to the Campus Dining Registered Dietitian. This must be done prior to, or within two weeks of, moving on campus. Those residents who obtain a meal plan waiver will be required to reside in or relocate to a resident hall/area designated as cooking. A pro-rated weekly charge for a meal plan will result until the waiver is obtained.
If you are a Jewish student or someone who keeps kosher who wants access to Delancey Street please reach out to Jessica Lemons, Executive Director of Stony Brook Hillel at jessica.lemons@stonybrook.edu
If you have special dietary needs based on allergies or other medical conditions it is important for you to set up a virtual appointment with our Campus Dining Dietitian. We will evaluate your needs and dietary restrictions to determine whether or not Campus Dining is able to meet your needs. To make an appointment visit the campus dining website.
Please contact Student Accessibility Support Center for meal plan accommodations. SASC will work collaboratively with the on campus dietitian regarding any dietary concerns. In order to meet your needs it would be best if documentation is submitted by the following dates:
- May 15 for the Fall Semester
- December 15 for the Spring Semester
Upgrades, Downgrades and Cancellations
Upgrades
- Upgrades can be made anytime throughout the semester. Please note, during the first 2 weeks of the semester, downgrade requests made Saturday through Thursday will take effect the following Friday.
- If you would like to change your meal plan, you can easily change it on the website prior to arrival to campus. If you request a change after the start of classes, meal plan changes will take effect on the Friday of the request week. Students will be charged for their current meal plan until the meal plan change goes into effect. Once the meal plan is changed, the amount billed to the student account is prorated for the current plan and the remaining weeks on the new plan.
Downgrades
- Downgrades can be made during the two weeks following the first day Monday-Friday classes begin.
- The final date to downgrade your meal plan for fall 2026 is Sunday, September 6.
- The final date to downgrade your meal plan for spring 2027 is Sunday, February 7.
Cancellations
- Meal plans may not be canceled after December 1 for the fall semester and after May 1 for the spring semester.
- Students who wish to cancel their meal plan because they have moved off-campus or to a cooking building/area in the Residence Halls must notify the Auxiliary Services Association (ASA) Services Office either in writing to: mealplan@stonybrook.edu or in person at the Auxiliary Services Association (ASA) Services Office.
- Should the Stony Brook University campus decide to close unexpectedly due to public health concerns in accordance with state, county, or university mandates and requirements, ASA will offer fair and reasonable reimbursement of the meal plan fee for impacted students as appropriate and based on information available at that time.
Withdrawing from the University
- Students who withdraw from the University will be billed a prorated portion of the meal plan up to, and including, the official withdrawal date. Pro-rations are calculated on a weekly basis.
- If you are a resident, you must contact and return your campus housing key to your area office within 48 hours of withdrawing. You are not permitted to remain in campus housing more than 48 hours after your withdrawal/leave of absence has been processed.
- Housing charges and meal plan charges (for students in a room which requires the meal plan) will be prorated based upon the date your key is officially returned and all belongings are removed. No pro ration will be applied if your move-out is after the last day of classes (day before reading day). If you are hospitalized and/or your medical issue prevents you from coming to campus to return your key, please contact the Dean of Students Office at (631) 632-7320 for assistance.
- If you participate in a meal plan that is not mandatory, please cancel your plan by contacting the Auxiliary Services Association (ASA) Services Office at (631) 632-6517 after you move out. Your meal plan charge will be prorated based on the number of weeks the plan was active and the dollar amount used. Return to housing is prioritized on a space-available basis only if you receive an approved medical leave or military leave and return to housing on your first academic semester back from leave. Housing is not guaranteed or prioritized for any other type of leave.
- You must fill out an undergraduate semester withdrawal form on the Office of the Registar's website.
