The Department of Languages and Cultural Studies fosters research and teaching in modern and classical languages, literatures, and cultures at the undergraduate and graduate levels, in native languages and in translation. The Department prepares students for professional training, graduate study, and for a global market in which knowledge of other languages and cultures is increasingly essential.

Cultural and Research Centers On Campus

Center for Hellenic Studies

With the study of Greece and Hellenism, the Center aspires to educate and nurture students with the values of Hellenic civilization. It also aims to form strong bonds between the University and the Greek-American communities of Long Island and New York, and establish connections and interactions with educational and academic institutions in Greece.

Center for Italian Studies

Since its establishment in 1985, the Center for Italian Studies has become an integral part of the Italian and Italian-American community on Long Island. Its mission, in part, is to stimulate interdisciplinary research in Italian and Italian-American studies by the local academic community. It also hosts a calendar of cultural and educational events and offers community Italian language classes.

Language Learning and Research Center

The LLRC provides a platform for language instructors and learners to exchange ideas and resources; and encourages research efforts aimed at developing innovative teaching methods and enriching language curricula. The LLRC also administers language placement exams.

Program in Globalization Studies

Globalization Studies and International Relations is an interdisciplinary major/minor program that combines academic perspectives from the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and engineering to study, research, and create knowledge on global and trans-regional issues. The program aims to educate future leaders in global policy-making, international service, diplomacy, and activism.
