Graduate Awards and Scholarships

Purpose: Recognizes a promising student who has made a significant contribution to the department during the current academic year.

Eligibility and Criteria

  • Nominees must be graduate students or PhD candidates in the Department of English.
  • Nominees must be in good academic standing, as verified by the Graduate Program Committee.

Nomination Process

  • Any faculty member may nominate an MA or PhD student.
  • The faculty member should complete the Google Form.

Purpose: Recognizes excellence in teaching by a graduate student in the Department of English.

Eligibility and Criteria

  • Applicants must be Department of English doctoral students and teaching assistants.
  • Applicants must be in good academic standing.
  • Applicants must have served as the primary instructor for at least two completed courses.
  • Application Process
  • Students apply directly through the Google Form. Faculty members are encouraged to invite eligible students to apply.

Applications must include:

  • A one- to two-page statement describing the applicant’s approach to teaching.
  • Syllabi, assignments, and student evaluations from two completed courses for which the applicant was the primary instructor.
  • One letter of support from someone who has observed the applicant’s teaching. The letter may be:
    • From a faculty member familiar with a course for which the applicant had primary responsibility; or
    • From a faculty member for whom the applicant served as a teaching assistant, provided that person can speak to the applicant’s classroom teaching.
  • Up to five optional letters or emails from undergraduate students taught by the applicant.

Purpose: Recognizes the best graduate essay written by an English MA student during the current academic year.

Eligibility and Criteria

  • The essay must have been written for an EGL course during the current academic year.
  • Applicants must be enrolled in the Department of English MA or MAT program.
  • Each student may submit only one essay.

Application Process

  • Students apply directly by completing the Google Form.
  • Faculty members are encouraged to invite eligible students to apply.

Purpose: Recognizes an outstanding dissertation chapter written by a doctoral student in the Department of English.

Eligibility and Criteria

  • Applicants must be doctoral students in the Department of English.
  • The submitted chapter must be a final draft approved by the dissertation advisor.
  • The full dissertation does not need to be complete.
  • Dissertation titles and abstracts are encouraged.

Application Process

  • Students apply directly by completing the Google Form and uploading the chapter as a PDF.
  • The dissertation advisor must confirm that the chapter is an approved final draft.
  • Faculty members are encouraged to invite eligible students to apply.

Purpose: Recognizes the best dissertation filed during the current academic year.

Eligibility and Criteria

  • The dissertation must be filed during the current academic year (Fall–Summer).
  • Evaluation is based on originality, contribution to scholarship, significant research, and excellence of composition.

Nomination Process:

  • Nominations must be submitted by the dissertation advisor.
  • The advisor should complete the Google Form.

Awarded to PhD Candigates who have successfully defended their Dissertation in the last academic year.
