Stony Brook Killers, Stony Brook's Film School Soccer Team,
Makes Knockout Round of 2015 NYFEST Industry Tournament

soccerNew York and Southampton, NY, April 21, 2015 - Stony Brook University announced today that the Stony Brook Killers, the Stony Brook / Killer MFA in Film soccer team, made it to the knock out round on their debut performance at the 2015 New York Film and Entertainment Soccer Tournament (NYFEST) at Pier 5, Brooklyn Bridge Park held Saturday April 19.

With a team created from 2013 and 2014 alumni and current students, the Killers thrashed the Tribeca Film Festival Shorts 4-1 in the first round, with goalie and team captain Brad Becker-Parton playing a near shut out game. Goals were scored by MVP Richie Duque (2), Ally Turner-Kirkpatrick (1), and Dejan Pavlovic (1).

In the second round, they were pitted against Park Pictures, being awarded winners of that game before it began. Park didn't meet the "Just For Kicks" requirement of having at least one woman on its team and therefore forfeited. The Killers had plenty of women to spare, being the only team with equal representation of men and women.

The Stony Brook team was composed of filmmakers Richard Duque ("A Lonely Hymn", Director of Film Institute at The Creative Mind Group), Ally Turner-Kirkpatrick ("Checked Out" and awardee of the IFP/Marcie Bloom Fellowship in Film), Dejan Pavlovic ("Girl Seeking"), Danielle Bellucci ("Treasure", videographer for the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County), Michelle Ngo ("Dreams into Focus"), Jason Evans ("Still Alice, "Charlie"), Cécile Ragot, ("Wanderings," SFC Cannes Film Festival), Alexandra Stergiou ("Soothsayers," the Emerging Storyteller award from the Jesse Thompkins III Foundation), Evan Reeves ("House of Cats"), Killer Development Executive Brad Becker-Parton and coached by Killer Development Consultant and Stony Brook faculty Lenny Crooks.

The Killers suffered their first real loss in the third round to the Made in NY Media Center by IFP. The Killers brushed off that loss and moved on to the highly prestigious knock out round, playing against The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. The Killers also lost that game after the new host, Trevor Noah, scored the final goal. However, there was no sorrow for the Killers, since they surpassed expectations and made it to the knock out round on their debut performance. Killers' MVP Richie Duque summarized the day: "We all went into it mentioning how out of shape and horrible we were, and by the end we were in the knock-out round and talking about next year's jerseys." "No shame being knocked out by The Daily Show," added Killers' player Evan Reeves.

Stony Brook was invited by NYFEST Co-founder Dylan Leiner of Sony Pictures Entertainment.
