  Overcoming Social Justice Fatigue for Diversity and Inclusion Professionals

Learn how to combat social justice fatigue through intentional self-care and wellness plans.
The unique pressures and demands that diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) professionals experience often lead to burnout, exhaustion, and frustration about the lack of change they see on their campuses. Many feel the pressure to manage this stress alone, fearing that they’ll lose their professional credibility and reputation otherwise. However, this behavior can often result in decreased productivity and morale. How can these DEI professionals create the tools and put the plans in place to manage their own self-care, and what can their peers and supervisors do to best support them?

Join our expert instructor Sara Furr as she discusses social justice fatigue, why and how this physical and emotional toll occurs, and what wellness strategies DEI professionals can use to achieve a balanced and sustainable self-care routine. You’ll have the opportunity to reflect on where you currently stand, put next steps in place for implementing your wellness plan, hear tips and strategies for following through, and get to know the most common barriers your peers face when implementing such plans. In addition, we will also cover some simple ways non-DEI professionals can adopt to support their colleagues engaged in social justice work on campus.

Making Room at the Table for All of Us: Meaningful Mentorship Among Women of Color

With recent events, being a woman of color has taken on multiple meanings, and finding support within student affairs has never been more crucial. In order to support their students, women of color must also learn how to seek support from each other. This session seeks to continue valuable conversations on the importance of a strong network and creating a support system for women of color. Panelists from different institutions will speak about their experiences and how their identities as a woman of color and a professional intersect, particularly as mentors and mentees.

Wellbeing and Religious Identity: How We Are Missing a Component of the Student Experience

When student affairs professionals discuss wellbeing, we often consider financial wellbeing, physical wellbeing, emotional wellbeing and social wellbeing. But often forgotten is the importance of spiritual wellbeing, an element highlighted extensively in the 2003-2005 UCLA Study of Spirituality in Higher Education. Follow up work to this seminal study by Dr. Jenny Small and others have found that this area wellbeing may be extraordinarily important for college students. Yet, the data finds that marginalized religious students may be missing out on these benefits due to environmental conditions present on the college campus.

Socioeconomic Status and Social Class in Higher Education

This program will offer participants an overview of class identity and its corresponding forms of capital (Bourdieu, 1986; Yosso, 2005). The workshop will offer information from research and literature while also allowing participants to reflect on and assess how class identity does and might show up in higher education and student affairs. The three content categories of the session will include: 1) Defining Class, 2) Types of Capital, 3) Interactions Between Class Identity and Student Affairs.

The School of Professional Development's Higher Education Administration program and the Division of Student Affairs are hosting the  9th Annual "Careers in Higher Education" conference .   This is a free event that provides very good opportunities for students or new higher education professionals to learn more about the higher education field, hear from experienced professionals, discuss "hot topics" in higher education today, and network with others from local colleges and universities.  A light breakfast and lunch are also included.

This online briefing highlights results from a dissertation study investigating how Black male administrators navigate racism in higher education. Results from this dissertation study are used to inform a new theory and concepts about navigating racism in higher education.

Asexuality: A Brief Overview 

In 2014, the Asexual Visibility and Education Network (AVEN) conducted a census of the asexual community, receiving over 14,000 responses. Results showed that asexual individuals are first recognizing their asexual identity and coming out to others (if they come out at all) during a time that they will possibility be attending higher education institutions. This makes it crucial for asexual representation and understanding within identity-based departments and organizations of higher education. Participants will gain knowledge of asexuality and the need to build ally curriculum at their own institutions.

Fall 2018

DLDI Higher Education Professional Workshops, November 27 & 29: Members of the DLDI led two professional competencies workshops based on the results from a NASPA/ACPA Professional Comptencies Self-Assessment. 

The first workshop involved graduate students in the Higher Education Administration Program, and the second workshop involved student affairs professionals.  Both workshops focused on areas that the participants indicated more need of awareness and relevance. 

Afterwards, both groups of participants were able to have small group discussions regarding alignment with their graduate studies or their professional development.  Results and feedback from these workshops will develop the content for future workshops to be held in Spring 2019.

DLDI Graduate Student Mixer, September 12, 2018:  Members of DLDI and graduate students within the Higher Education Administration Program participated in a networking mixer.  Graduate students that identified as being historically underrepresented were able to meet with Higher Education Professionals to learn more about how to navigate the terrain of higher education.

DLDI Professional Mixer

Here is what you missed:

On October 3, the Division of Student Affairs and the DLDI  Steering Committee hosted a professional mixer that welcomed back over 25 members of the Student Affairs community and graduate students in the Higher Education Administration Graduate Program.  While members snacked on light refreshments and networked, members of the DLDI led conversations about the origin, current status, and future events with the DLDI. 

They also shared personal accounts about challenges and opportunities associated with their respective identities.  The invididuals that attended left the mixer feeling empowered to tell their story, felt as if someone actively listened, and they strengthened their connection with members within and outside student affairs.  As for the graduate students, they made key personal and professional connections that could possibly lead to opportunities in the near future.  Please stay tuned for upcoming events that in late October and November.
