Postbaccalaureate Research Education Program (R25 - Independent Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

The Office of the Vice President for Research invites applications for the Postbaccalaureate Research Education Program (R25 - Independent Clinical Trial Not Allowed). The program supports educational activities that encourage individuals from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences, to pursue further studies or careers in research. Stony Brook University can submit ONE application to this FOA.

WHAT DOES IT FUND: This FOA provides support to eligible, domestic institutions to develop and implement effective, evidence-informed approaches to biomedical research education and mentoring that will keep pace with the rapid evolution of the research enterprise. NIGMS expects that the proposed research education programs will incorporate extensive research experiences and well-designed courses for skills development to prepare recent baccalaureates from diverse backgrounds to transition into and complete rigorous, research-focused doctoral degree programs (e.g., Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D.) in biomedical fields. 

APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS: The PD(s)/PI(s) must be able to provide both administrative and scientific leadership to the development and implementation of the proposed program. At least one of the PD(s)/PI(s) should be an established investigator in the biomedical sciences. Additional PD(s)/PI(s), including individuals with experience in the science of education, relevant social science disciplines, program evaluation, mentoring, and university administration may be included to achieve the program goals. Any of the PD(s)/PI(s) may serve as the contact PD/PI. The contact PD/PI is expected to have a full-time appointment at the applicant institution unless extremely well-justified. If the full-time status of the contact PD/PI changes after the award, the institution must obtain prior program approval to appoint a new PD/PI or request a deviation from the full-time rule. 

AWARD: The total direct costs for each award are limited to $400,000 annually. The total project period may not exceed 5 years.

A complete pre-application should comprise of the following:

    • Research Education Program Plan that includes a description of: the proposed research education program, the participating faculty, the intended participants, and a recruitment plan to enhance diversity (2-3 pages limit)
    • Budget justification (1 page limit)
    • Biosketches for key personnel (5 page limit for each investigator)
