MFA in Film Student Yasmine Gomez Receives New York Women in Film and Television Scholarship

yasmine gomezNovember 16, 2017 — Stony Brook Killer Films MFA in Film student Yasmine Gomez has been selected to receive the 2017 New York Women in Film and Television (NYWIFT) Scholarship.

Gomez’s scholarship is part of NYWIFT’s Scholarship Fund offered to provide financial assistance to second-year women graduate film students based in the New York area. The $2,500 scholarship awards Yasmine financial assistance for her film projects while also providing her access to networks and professional development opportunities of New York’s preeminent entertainment industry association for women in the industry.

"We're delighted that New York Women in Film and Television has chosen Stony Brook’s MFA thesis student Yasmine Gomez as the recipient of its annual scholarship," said MFA in Film Director Magdalene Brandeis. "Yasmine is a serious filmmaker who has committed her career to fostering stories featuring strong female characters and women of color, often reversing traditional narratives. Her thesis work aligns perfectly with NYWIFT’s mission and the mission set forth by our MFA Program’s Artistic Director, Christine Vachon."

As an independent filmmaker, Yasmine Gomez produced the feature film, A Picture of You, and the ITVS Women & Girls Narratives short film, Not Another Word, by writer/director Cherien Dabis. She was also the first assistant director on the 2015 Sundance award-winning feature Advantageous, directed by Jennifer Phang.

Yasmine has directed multiple award-winning shorts including Consumed (Best Film, 48-Hr Film Project San Francisco), music video You Will Remember, mockumentary short Asian American Jesus, and Terra Cotta (Grand Prize and Best Director, 72-Hour Film Shootout). She also directed scenes for the NBC Scene Showcase in New York.

She has produced and directed digital video content for Condé Nast, Hearst, Complex Media, and Bustle, as well as branded content and commercials for clients such as VH1, T-Mobile, L'Oréal, and Aloft Hotels.

Her short film AISLE 6 with which she submitted for the NYWIFT Scholarship is about Jen, who is faced with the decision to go against her religious sister's beliefs and protect the safety of her young niece.

Yasmine received her B.A. in Molecular and Cell Biology from the University of California at Berkeley with a minor in Ethnic Studies.
