The Language Learning Research Center (LLRC) at Stony Brook University is proud to host its first STARTALK program for high school juniors/seniors, and college students. The program provides an opportunity to earn 6 college credits in just 7 weeks through intensive introductions to Arabic, Korean, Persian and Turkish. The courses are designed to teach the language to novice-level learners through student-centered, creative, interpersonal, presentational, and interpretive tasks which allow students to build speaking, listening, reading and writing skills as well as intercultural competence. In addition to daily instruction, this summer program features organized field trips to relevant cultural sites, guest speakers on topics which tie into our theme, and film screenings.

Note: The STARTALK 2014 Program at Stony Brook is a non-residential program. Students are advised to manage their housing and transportation during the program period.

Scholarship Opportunities

Up to 5 students in each of the three languages (15 in total) will receive scholarships to cover the cost of tuition, fees, and textbooks for these courses, which are designed to prepare students for continued study of those languages both here and abroad.

Application Process:

  1. All students* will need to register for the course. To register, visit: (select Extended Session 2).

  2. Complete an  online application form. Print and ask your parent/guardian to sign this completed form if you are under 18 years old.

  3. Submit the permission form for audio/video recording:

*Note: For high school students: If you are over the age of 16, please follow this link to register for the summer course: It is also important for the parents to understand that this is a college course and their child will be interacting with college students that may be many years older than them. 

Students who are interested in applying for a scholarship for summer study should also submit:

  1. Two (2)  letters of recommendation from current or former teachers/professors who can attest to their academic preparation and potential

  2. School Transcripts (unofficial transcripts are acceptable for screening) 

  3. A one page personal statement explaining why you are interested in studying this language this summer.
