The one volume was compiled in honor of Howard Townsend (1858-1935). It includes carbon copies and transcriptions of biographical information about Howard Townsend, correspondence, and letters of condolence to his widow Mrs. Anne Lowndes LangdonTownsend.

Howard Townsend, Jr. (1858-1935) was born in Albany, New York on August 23, 1858. His father Howard Townsend (1823-1867) was a prominent physician practicing in Albany, New York and professor at the Albany Medical College and a member of the staff at the Albany Hospital. His mother was Justine Van Rensselaer (1828-1912), daughter of General Stephen Van Rensselaer IV (1789-1868) and Harriet Elizabeth Van Rensselaer (née Bayard). Justine’s paternal grandfather was Stephen Van Rensselaer III
