Extent, Scope, and Content Note
The Literary Broadsides Collection documents independent publishers and authors of popular culture in the mid-twentieth century. Reference checklists such as Six Poets of the San Francisco Renaissance: Portraits and Checklists by David Kherdian, housed within our collection, indicates a possible method of selection for this collection.

The collection consists of works published in broadside form between the 1940s through the 1980s. Collection highlishts include: Auerhahn Press' OYEZ series, Belleview Press' Postcard series, Broadside Press' Broadside series, Brownstone Press' Butterfly Broadside series, Burning Deck Postcard series, Cold Mountain Press Poetry Card series, Portents' Broadsides, State University of New York at Buffalo's Christmas Broadside series, Stone House Press' Broadside series and Unicorn Press' Broadsheet series.

In addition, there are a large number of published works not in a series, but from a specific publisher, including: Black Sparrow Press, Kriya Press of Sri Ram Ashrama and The Wine Press. Of special note, there are a number of broadsides within this collection that are within the top ten percent of its numbered edition. Historical Note
The essence of literary creativity exhibited in this collection reflects the counterculture movement of the 1960s and 1970s. The freedom to communicate uninhibitedly enables the writer to explore issues in a new manner, practically reinventing the communication process as a whole. As a result, authors and poets sought out private, independent publishers and presses to further promote their intellectual and creative ideals, and in some instances, established their own. David Haselwood spent the summer of 1958 in San Francisco, with a dream of establishing his own press. Dissatisfied with the status of the presses and publishing houses in existence due to their lack of vision and their focus on commercialism, Haselwood established the Auerhahn Press to be a revolutionary force in the publishing industry, printing the works of the younger poets, in cooperation with them. Created by Dudley Randall in 1965 out of his home in Detroit, Michigan, Broadside Press was founded to publish his own poetry as well as the works of the major African-American poetry of the time, with a focus on quality broadsides and books published inexpensively. In the midst of the Civil Rights Movement, this was a groundbreaking endeavor. For these two examples, it was the satisfaction, not the motive, in promoting the aesthetic and literary value that became the draw for the generally overlooked authors and poets of the counterculture.
