Historical Note
Irving Like (1924-2018) was a longtime resident of Babylon and Bay Shore, New York, and an attorney who worked to preserve the natural environment of Long Island. His legal practice, Reilly, Like and Schneider, and later Reilly, Like and Tenety, worked on complex litigation on the environment, land use, zoning, tax certiorari and real estate. Like’s first public legal battle was against Robert Moses, another Babylon resident. Moses was prevented from paving over the barrier beach on Fire Island. Like was also able to convince the U.S. Congress to make the area a national seashore and drafted the legislation leading to this major accomplishment. He also fought the Long Island Lighting Company’s plan to build the Shoreham nuclear power plant in the mid 1960s, as well as other plants on Long Island.

Like was the oldest son of two immigrants from Russia, Benjamin and Esther Like. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from City College of New York and Columbia University Law School. He was admitted to the Bar in 1950 and moved to Long Island in 1954. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II. Like was named by Newsday as one of the 100 Most Influential Long Islanders of the 20th century and served as counsel to Suffolk County; chaired the Law Committee of Agent Orange law firms; and was counsel to the Fire Island National Seashore Citizens Committee.
