ADMINISTRATIVE INFORMATION Title Description George Goldberg Memorial Digitization Project Introduction The collection focuses on George Goldberg's professional career and as founder and editor of SCAN Newsletter. The collection is open to research without restrictions. Mrs. Teddy Goldberg retains rights to his personal papers and publications. All requests should be addressed to Special Collections. In citing the collection, please credit it as follows: George Goldberg Collection, Special Collections, Stony Brook University Libraries. George Goldberg, co-founder of the AIDC 100 and publisher of SCAN Newsletter, began his professional career outside the AIDC field. He attended City College of New York where he received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Market Research and Statistics. Later, he attended New York University (NYU) where he studied economics and market research, and received a Master of Business Administration (MBA). Upon completing his education, Mr. Goldberg's first position was as a project leader for a market research firm that specialized in surveying young people. After three years, he left market research and took a position as chief statistician with a newly formed joint procurement agency of the U. S. Department of Defense. After a few years, he left government service and took a position with a diversified company (listed on the American Stock Exchange) that manufactured and marketed microfilm equipment and plastic products. He stayed with this firm for seventeen years, ultimately attaining the position of president and chief executive officer. He left the company in 1973. Soon after, he was retained as a consultant to a company that manufactured bar code film masters for the newly introduced UPC technology. After two years of consulting, Mr. Goldberg and his wife, Teddy, formed their own operating company, GGX Associates. GGX marketed film masters and pressure sensitive labels, especially designed for the UPC bar code as well as other applications. The company flourished under their direction and soon became one of the leading marketers of film masters and pressure sensitive labels in the industry. The company was sold in 1992. During his early years in AIDC, Mr. Goldberg noticed that there were no trade publications that dealt with the burgeoning industry. Finding the niche, he decided to fill it. In 1977, he and Teddy, with their son Jeff as associate Editor, created SCAN Newsletter, a trade publication that explored the various aspects of the growing AIDC field. Included was coverage of AIDC technologies such as: bar coding, radio frequency (RFID and RFDC), magnetic stripe, OCR, voice recognition, smart cards and biometrics. Also included were market analyses and various other topics of interest to professionals. The publication had fewer than one hundred subscribers at its inception, but grew steadily over the next 19 years. In 1996, Mr. Goldberg sold the publication to Corry Publishing (where it is now published as SCAN: The Data Capture Report) and took the position of Contributing Editor; at the time of sale the newsletter had paid subscriptions in twenty-six countries around the globe. In 1982, in an endeavor to recognize individuals who had made positive contributions to the bar code industry, SCAN Newsletter, joined forces with AIM USA (Automatic Identification Manufacturers) to establish the prestigious Percival Award (in honor of Mr. Don Percival, one of the early founders and pioneers in barcode scanning technology). The award has been presented annually to individuals or organizations in recognition of outstanding contributions to the field of automatic identification and data capture technology by members and professionals within the AIDC community. One of Mr. Goldberg's most prominent achievements has been the co-founding of the AIDC 100 with Ben Nelson and Chet Benoit, an organization of the leading professionals within the AIDC's vendor, user and associated communities. The organization's active membership is by invitation only and is limited to one hundred active members at any given time (members who retire are designated as "inactive" but retain full membership privileges), selected from the most outstanding professionals from the AIDC industry. The most significant achievement of the organization has been the establishment of the AIDC 100 Archives at SUNY Stony Brook. The Archive is the only central resource for documents, research reports, publications, artifacts and other archival material gathered worldwide. The AIDC 100 Archives provides invaluable assistance to writers, researchers, students and the media about the history and technology of the AIDC industry. In addition to his many contributions to the AIDC community, Mr. Goldberg has sat on the ANSI (American National Standards Institute) committees that established package-marking standards; he has worked as technical advisor to the book publishing industry committee on bar coding; he has conducted seminars on bar coding in the United States, Canada, Europe and China; and he has written numerous articles on the AIDC industry for publication. In 1996, he sold SCAN Newsletter, but remained an active participant in the industry through his leadership of AIDC 100 and as Contributing Editor for SCAN: The Data Capture Report. His contributions to the field of Automatic Identification and Data Capture stand as a monument to the field to which he dedicated himself, and the technology he helped the world understand. The George Goldberg Collection consists of sixteen series: general reference, bar codes, additional AIDC technologies, non-retail industry applications, industry activities, trade associations, trade shows, corporate files, SCAN monthly working papers, periodicals, books, video recordings, audio recordings, electronic media, artifacts/equipment and slides.
