Are you a Stony Brook researcher in the Humanities stuck in the mid-career doldrums? Apply now to participate in the inaugural Second Book Instituteat HISB: a yearlong program designed to put wind in your sails and send you off into Summer 2027 with a clear plan for developing and completing your second book. As part of a cohort of mid-career faculty looking to jumpstart second projects, Institute participants will attend a series of six panels and round tables (three in Fall 2026, three in Spring 2027) with faculty who have completed second books, and with acquisitions editors and other representatives from both academic and trade presses.
All events will take place in HISB 1008 during Campus Lifetime, with lunch provided. The cohort will also have access to HISB 1009 on Fridays from 11AM-3PM for the Writing Room, a dedicated writing group for accountability, peer support, and community (coffee, tea, and pastries provided).
Eligibility
- The Second Book Institute is open to Stony Brook faculty in the Arts, Humanities and Lettered Social Sciences who have already published a single-authored monograph
- Applicants may be at any stage of the process of developing and writing a second book
- Interested applicants must apply by September 14, 2026, using the form below
Expectations
The success of the Institute hinges on active and sustained participation by cohort members. With this in mind:
- selected applicants are expected to attend all events in person (lunch will be provided)
- selected applicants are expected to participate either in person or on Zoom in the weekly writing group, with a minimum one-hour commitment

- 100-word reflection on the conventions in your discipline for second projects, as you understand them (including if you’re unclear on them)
