Meet Motorsports!
Established in 1987, Stony Brook Motorsports brings together students from all majors and academic levels to design, build, and test a custom off-road vehicle for international Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) competitions. Team members apply classroom learning to solve complex engineering challenges while managing real-world operations, including budgeting, logistics, and project management.
Mission
Stony Brook Motorsports designs builds and tests an off-road vehicle in order to compete against over 100 universities from around the world at events hosted by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). We are committed to giving our members a valuable education in what it takes to be an engineer and design projects with real-world applications, and are dedicated to making the experience as fun and rewarding as possible. Team members can develop skills in design, manufacturing, electronics, and business. All Stony Brook students, regardless of year, major, or experience, are welcome to join.

SAE Baja Competition
Stony Brook Motorsports competes annually in international SAE Baja events that challenge students to design, build, test, and market a custom off-road vehicle. Operating as a mock corporate entity, the team manages everything from design, manufacturing, and dynamic field tests to cost reports and sales presentations for a simulated manufacturing firm. Performance is evaluated through technical reports, business pitches, and dynamic tests including acceleration, hill climbs, and maneuverability.
Representing Stony Brook University and CEAS since 1987, the team consistently demonstrates engineering excellence with numerous top-10 global finishes.
