Founded in 2014, the Stony Brook Chapter of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA SBU) carries forward a rich national legacy dating back to 1963. Their mission is to inspire the next generation of aerospace innovators by connecting students with industry professionals, building valuable technical skills, and fostering a collaborative community. Through project teams, resume reviews, guest speaker panels, and networking events, AIAA SBU provides the resources you need to land your dream career in aerospace. Students of all majors and experience levels are invited to join!
Mission
AIAA's mission is to address the professional needs and interests of the past, current, and future aerospace workforce and to advance the state of aerospace science, engineering, technology, operations, and policy to benefit our global society.

AIAA Events
AIAA organizes a variety of events and workshops ranging from career development in the aerospace industry to learning how to use industry standard computer-aided design (CAD) tools to just hanging out and playing Kerbal Space Program.
In the Spring semester, AIAA hosts events like the Careers in Aerospace panel where they invite industry professional to connect and address questions.
NASA Student Launch Team
Founded in 2018, SBU Rocket Team is a student-led team under the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) at Stony Brook University dedicated to the advancement of space technologies and exploration. SBU Rocket Team’s membership primarily consists of engineering upperclassmen who participate in the mechanical engineering senior design project and this team functions to compete in the NASA Student Launch Competition. The main focus of this team is to design novel, rocket-flyable payload systems that highlight major challenges in space exploration and novel technologies as applicable to the aerospace sector.
The NASA Student Launch team has an integrated mentorship program that focuses on teaching underclassmen and preparing them to take on the project for their prospective senior design (capstone) project. Mentees closely follow the core team and is also delegated into one of the three main sub-teams in order to learn their core functions.
