Stony Brook Solar Racing Team

Meet Solar Racing!

The Stony Brook Solar Racing Team is a competitive organization at Stony Brook University. Students work together to design, build, and test a solar-powered race boat, with the aim of competing at two national competitions held in April and June.

Mission

The Stony Brook Solar Racing Team is an interdisciplinary student-run competitive organization at Stony Brook University. Students work together to research, design, produce, and test a solar-electric race boat for competition. Working independently in our machine shop, we produce a majority of the vessel in-house, such as motor controllers, drivetrain, composite molds, solar panels, control system, and various other mechanical/electrical devices. We also have many related research opportunities outside of the scope of competition, such as high voltage EVs and cutting-edge renewable energy.

First competing in 1998, the Solar Racing Team competes at the annual Solar Splash Competition. In addition to attending competition, we host a variety of workshops and side projects throughout the year to help team members learn about sustainable transportation, alternative energy, 3D CAD software, Arduino, web-dev, and more.

Solar Racing Events

The Solar Racing Team organizes a variety of events throughout the semester that allow you to make friends and have some fun, and help students develop professionally, such as workshops and hands-on engineering projects.

In the Spring semesters, Solar Racing participates in competitions for Solar Splash in Springfield, Ohio and Promoting Electric Propultion at Virgina Beach. Each semester Solar Racing participates in the Lake Ronkonkoma Wet Test.
