The Michel Colbert Endowed Scholarship was established to honor the memory of Michel
Colbert, a Stony Brook Biology graduate from the class of 1986 who was killed in the
September 11, 2001, attack on the World Trade Center. The primary goal of this award
is to support the successful completion of an undergraduate degree for a student facing
significant and unanticipated financial difficulties. While there is no strict requirement
for a specific year of study, students are typically selected as Michel Colbert Fellows
prior to their senior year. Recipients receive a full tuition scholarship to support
their studies through graduation, provided they maintain good academic standing and
full-time enrollment status.
Selection for the Michel Colbert Fellowship is based on several key criteria. Applicants
must be Stony Brook undergraduates with a strong record of achievement, preferably
within the biological sciences, and possess a clear plan for completing their Bachelor’s
degree program. Candidates must demonstrate that they are facing unexpected financial
challenges likely to interfere with the timely completion of their degree. Additionally,
applicants must submit a personal statement to be shared with the Colbert family that
explains their course of study and how this education will impact their future career
development and plans. Applications for the 2026–2027 application cycle will run
from March 30, 2026- April 30, 2026.
The Edward J. Mardovich '81 Memorial Scholarship in Undergraduate Biology was established
by the family, friends, and fellow alumni of "Eddie" Mardovich to provide permanent
scholarship support to Stony Brook students majoring in Biology. Eddie earned degrees
in both Biology and Sociology at Stony Brook and was a former employee at Euro-Brokers,
Inc. who was killed in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on September
11, 2001. This scholarship is available to any Junior or Senior majoring in Biology
who is a United States citizen and maintains a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
The selection process for the Mardovich Scholarship focuses on both academic records
and a specific personal statement. The statement must be 500 words or less and describe
the applicant’s course of study in Biology, including successes, achievements, research,
internships, and extracurricular experiences that have influenced their career plans.
Awards provide $1,000 of coverage for educational expenses per semester for a full
academic year. Students who receive the scholarship as Juniors may be eligible for
renewal. To remain eligible, recipients are expected to maintain continuous full-time
enrollment with a minimum GPA of 3.0 throughout the scholarship period. Applications
for the 2026–2027 application cycle will run from March 30, 2026- April 30, 2026.
